MLAs Champion Commercial Farming at Hubballi's Dry Chilli Mela

MLA NH Konaraddi inaugurated the 14th dry red chilli mela at Murusavira Math High School grounds in Hubballi on Friday, delivering a strong message to farmers about embracing commercial agriculture and innovative crop varieties. The event, organized in collaboration with multiple agricultural bodies, highlighted the significance of the Byadagi chilli and the need for robust government support.

Call for Diversification and Innovation

Konaraddi emphasized that farmers should actively pursue the cultivation of commercial crops and explore new varieties to enhance productivity and profitability. He pointed out that the Byadagi chilli variety, grown extensively in regions such as Navalgund, Naragund, Gadag, Kundagol, and Bagalkot, serves as a prime example of a successful commercial crop.

The MLA stressed the importance of disseminating research findings from institutions like the Horticulture University of Bagalkot directly to farmers. He noted that new crop varieties developed through such research must reach agricultural communities to foster innovation and sustainability in farming practices.

Health Benefits and Market Demand

Addressing common misconceptions, Konaraddi clarified that red chilli does not cause diseases and is widely consumed for its culinary and health benefits. He highlighted the high demand for red chillies in major urban centers, including Bengaluru and Mumbai, underscoring its potential as a lucrative crop for farmers.

"The growing popularity of red chilli in cities presents a significant opportunity for our farmers to tap into expanding markets," Konaraddi remarked during his speech.

Challenges and Government Support

Konaraddi acknowledged the financial challenges associated with chilli cultivation, noting that the cost of growing chilli crops is substantial and the area dedicated to dry chilli farming is gradually decreasing. To counteract this trend, he called for increased subsidies and support prices from both the central and state governments.

  • Provide subsidies to reduce the financial burden on farmers.
  • Establish fair support prices to ensure profitability.
  • Promote the export of Indian crops to international markets.

He also emphasized the need to encourage farmers to align their crop choices with local weather conditions, promoting climate-resilient agriculture.

Support from Fellow MLA MR Patil

MLA MR Patil, who also attended the inauguration, echoed Konaraddi's sentiments, advocating for greater encouragement for farmers to grow red chillies. He called for enhanced publicity for the Byadagi chilli variety to boost its recognition and marketability.

Patil emphasized that favorable weather is crucial for crop success and stressed the importance of keeping farmers informed about new varieties and best practices. He urged collaborative efforts between government agencies and agricultural organizations to ensure that farmers receive timely information and support.

Collaborative Efforts and Future Prospects

The dry chilli mela was organized through a partnership involving the Karnataka State Spices Development Board, the horticulture department, the Karnataka Entrepreneurship Institute, the Amarashiva Farmers Producers' Association, Sanshi (Kundagol), and the Uluva Yogi Horticulture Farmers Producer Company Ltd. This collaboration aims to provide a platform for farmers to showcase their produce, exchange knowledge, and access resources.

Konaraddi concluded by reiterating that empowering farmers with the right tools, information, and financial support is essential for revitalizing the agricultural sector and ensuring food security. The event served as a catalyst for discussions on sustainable farming practices and the future of commercial agriculture in Karnataka.
