MLC Calls for Immediate Traffic Solutions After Fatal Mangaluru Accident
In the wake of a tragic road accident that claimed the life of a young woman, Mangaluru's political representatives are demanding urgent action to address long-standing traffic hazards at a critical city junction.
Tragic Incident Sparks Safety Concerns
A day after 26-year-old Deepthi died when a bus rear-ended the scooter she was riding pillion on near the Nanthoor bus stand, MLC Ivan D'Souza has emphasized the critical need for immediate measures to resolve persistent traffic issues at Nanthoor junction.
The fatal collision has highlighted what local officials describe as systemic safety failures at one of Mangaluru's busiest intersections.
On-Site Assessment and Official Response
D'Souza visited the accident site on Friday to personally assess the circumstances that led to Deepthi's death. Following his inspection, he called for urgent steps to fix what he characterized as dangerous traffic conditions.
The MLC has scheduled an official meeting for Saturday to discuss comprehensive solutions to the junction's persistent traffic problems. This meeting will bring together key stakeholders to develop actionable plans for improving safety and reducing congestion.
Specific Safety Deficiencies Identified
During his assessment, D'Souza identified several critical infrastructure deficiencies contributing to the hazardous conditions at Nanthoor junction:
- The absence of road reflectors, which D'Souza described as a long-standing issue requiring immediate attention
- Inadequate road painting that fails to properly guide traffic flow
- Insufficient or poorly maintained road signals that confuse drivers
- Accumulation of soil and stones along road edges that pose particular dangers to two-wheelers
"There is an urgent need to install reflectors, implement proper road painting, and ensure functional road signals," D'Souza stated. "I will convene a meeting with relevant officials to discuss these issues comprehensively."
Multi-Agency Collaboration for Solutions
During his site visit, D'Souza was joined by ACP (traffic) Najma Farooqi, corporation officials, and former mayors Shashidhar Hegde and Bhaskar Moily. Together, they discussed practical measures to ease congestion and restore order to the chaotic junction.
The collaborative discussion focused on both immediate interventions and longer-term infrastructure improvements that could prevent similar tragedies in the future.
D'Souza specifically noted that clearing accumulated soil and stones from road edges would provide safer passage for two-wheelers and contribute to smoother overall traffic flow through the problematic intersection.
The Saturday meeting is expected to produce concrete action plans addressing the multiple safety concerns identified during Friday's assessment of the fatal accident site.
