The ongoing construction of the Besa-Pipla Road in Nagpur has transformed into a daily ordeal for thousands of commuters, with swirling dust clouds, heavy traffic congestion, and hazardous conditions creating a perfect storm of road safety concerns. A constant stream of sand-laden trucks navigating the partially completed road has left a trail of loose sand across the carriageway. As vehicles jostle for limited space, their movement kicks up dense dust clouds that severely reduce visibility for all road users. This sandy accumulation has turned the surface skiddy, particularly perilous for two-wheeler riders who report numerous near-miss incidents.
School student Pranjal Suryawanshi described her frightening daily commute: "Every morning when I cycle to school, I feel terrified on this stretch. The sand from trucks spreads everywhere, and when cars pass, the rising dust makes it impossible to see ahead. My cycle frequently skids on the loose sand, and with heavy traffic passing dangerously close, it's a constant struggle."
Construction Challenges Amid Uninterrupted Traffic Flow
The road project, which recently received additional funding and an extension under the central road fund from Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, aims to enhance connectivity in Nagpur's rapidly expanding suburbs. However, Public Works Department officials acknowledge that continuous heavy vehicle movement presents the biggest obstacle to smooth execution.
A PWD source explained the dilemma: "The heavy influx of sand trucks makes daytime work nearly impossible at full capacity. We're forced to conduct intensive construction activities during night hours. Creating a diversion isn't feasible since this is the only major road in the area, and consistently high traffic volumes inevitably slow our progress."
Commuters Demand Immediate Regulatory Action
Local residents and daily travelers are growing increasingly frustrated with the dangerous conditions. Commuter Madhav Uttarwar highlighted the core issue: "Sand trucks block the entire road, leaving minimal space for other vehicles. The continuous sand spillage creates dusty, skiddy conditions throughout the stretch. Authorities must urgently regulate these trucks and implement better traffic management before a serious accident occurs."
Traffic police have deployed officers at key points including Besa Square, near Purshottam Bazaar, and road cutting areas to facilitate movement. DCP (Traffic) Lohit Matani emphasized that only permitted trucks should operate within city limits, noting that most current truck traffic is involved in the road construction itself.
