Karnataka Home Minister Dr. G Parameshwara has pledged to take up the brutal honour killing case from Hubballi's Inam Veerapur village as a special case with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, seeking the appointment of a special prosecutor to ensure swift justice. The minister made this commitment during a visit to the village on Wednesday, where he met the grieving family of the victim, Vivekanand Doddamani.
Minister's Visit and Family Demands
Parameshwara described the incident, where a pregnant woman was brutally murdered, as deeply unfortunate and unacceptable. "Such an incident should not happen," he stated emphatically after consoling the family at their home. The family presented several demands to the minister, which included:
- Providing a government job to Vivekanand Doddamani.
- Ensuring the harshest punishment for the accused.
- Comprehensive support for the victims' kin.
Parameshwara assured that all these demands would be discussed thoroughly with the chief minister before a decision is made. He emphasized that the state government is treating the matter with utmost seriousness and is committed to providing all necessary support to the affected family.
Review of Laws and Ongoing Investigation
In a significant announcement, the Home Minister revealed that the government plans to review the existing laws concerning honour killings. He indicated that amendments would be made to the legal framework if the review finds them necessary to prevent such heinous crimes in the future. This move signals a potential strengthening of legal provisions against honour-based violence in Karnataka.
Parameshwara explained that his visit to Inam Veerapur was delayed because the criminal investigation was actively underway. He also mentioned that the Social Welfare Minister would be visiting the village shortly to assess the situation and offer further support.
Assurance of Justice and Support
The Home Minister was unequivocal in his promise of justice. "The government will ensure punishment to the accused," he declared, reinforcing the administration's resolve. Following his visit to the village, Parameshwara also went to a private hospital in Hubballi to meet and inquire about the health of others who were injured in the same tragic incident.
The visit was attended by several dignitaries, including Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu, MLAs Prasad Abbaiyya and N H Konaraddi, and MLC F H Jakkappanavar, underscoring the collective concern of the local administration.
