SIR-2026 Electoral Roll Revision Starts in Dharwad

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls for 2026 officially commenced in Dharwad on Monday, marked by a mega awareness rally. The event was flagged off at the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation's Dharwad office, following directives from the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Mega Rally Kicks Off Voter Awareness Drive

The rally aimed to sensitize voters about the importance of updating and verifying their details in the electoral rolls. According to officials, the SIR-2026 drive will focus on adding new voters, correcting errors, and removing duplicate entries. The ECI has emphasized the need for accurate and inclusive electoral rolls ahead of upcoming elections.

The awareness rally saw participation from local leaders, election officials, and community members. They marched through key areas of Dharwad, carrying banners and chanting slogans to encourage citizens to check their voter status.

ECI Directives and Implementation

The SIR-2026 exercise is part of the ECI's broader effort to ensure error-free electoral rolls. The commission has instructed all district administrations to conduct intensive revision drives across the state. In Dharwad, special camps will be set up in schools, colleges, and public offices to facilitate easy registration and correction of entries.

"This is a crucial step to strengthen democracy. Every eligible voter must ensure their name is on the rolls," said a senior election official from Dharwad district. The official added that the drive will continue for several weeks, with door-to-door campaigns in rural areas.

Impact on Voter Turnout

Accurate electoral rolls are expected to boost voter participation in the next elections. According to data from the 2023 state elections, Dharwad district had a voter turnout of approximately 68%. Officials hope that the SIR-2026 initiative will help increase this figure by enrolling more young and first-time voters.

The ECI has also launched a mobile app and a helpline number for citizens to check their registration status. The deadline for submitting applications for inclusion or correction is set for mid-August 2026.
