Sunetra Pawar Poised to Lead NCP as National Chief After Ajit Pawar's Demise
Sunetra Pawar Set to Become NCP National Chief

Sunetra Pawar Emerges as Frontrunner for NCP Leadership Role

In a significant political development, Sunetra Pawar, who recently took charge as Maharashtra's deputy chief minister, is now poised to ascend to the position of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) national chief. This move comes in the wake of the tragic demise of her husband, Ajit Pawar, who lost his life in an air crash last week.

Unanimous Support from Party Leaders

Amidst widespread speculation regarding the succession, Praful Patel, the party's working president, has categorically ruled himself out of contention for the top post. Instead, he has thrown his weight behind Sunetra Pawar, emphasizing that the party collectively desires her to accept the leadership role.

"We would all like her to accept the post of party chief and support her in taking the party forward. This would be the real homage to Ajit Pawar," Patel stated unequivocally. He further clarified that a formal party meeting would be convened to formalize this decision, aligning it with the sentiments of both party members and the public.

Guardian Minister Appointments and Political Consolidation

Concurrently, the Maharashtra government has appointed Sunetra Pawar as the guardian minister for Pune and Beed, districts that were previously under the stewardship of Ajit Pawar. This strategic appointment is seen as a step towards consolidating her political influence and ensuring continuity in governance.

Clarification on Merger Speculations

Addressing rumors of a potential merger between the NCP and Sharad Pawar's NCP (SP), Patel dismissed such talks as unfounded. He reiterated that the party's immediate focus remains on settling internal affairs and honoring Ajit Pawar's legacy.

"We are focusing on settling party affairs," Patel asserted, adding that Ajit Pawar had explicitly clarified on multiple occasions that no merger proposal was under consideration. He explained that any coordination between the two factions was limited to local body elections, citing examples of alliances with BJP in Ahilyanagar and Shiv Sena in Nasik.

Patel also downplayed videos depicting meetings between NCP and NCP (SP) leaders, noting, "We do meet... We were once part of the same family." This statement underscores the historical ties while distancing from any formal unification plans.

Looking Ahead: A New Chapter for NCP

As the NCP navigates this period of transition, the anticipated elevation of Sunetra Pawar to the national chief's position marks a pivotal moment in the party's history. With unwavering support from key figures like Praful Patel, the party aims to forge a path forward that honors Ajit Pawar's contributions while embracing new leadership under Sunetra Pawar's guidance.
