In a significant development for Tiruchirappalli district, the Tamil Nadu State Highways Department has initiated a crucial project to widen a key temple road. The work aims to transform the narrow Thiruvellarai–Omandur Road into a modern two-lane facility, addressing long-standing congestion issues faced by devotees and residents alike.
Project Details and Public Initiative
The ambitious project, sanctioned with a budget of ₹7 crore, was set in motion following persistent representations from the local community. Residents leveraged the state government's Ungal Thoguthiyil Mudhalaimaichar (Chief Minister in Your Constituency) scheme to highlight the urgent need for better infrastructure. The 5.2-kilometre stretch, currently classified as an Other District Road (ODR), branches off from the busy Trichy–Thuraiyur state highway. It serves as a vital arterial link connecting two major religious sites: the revered Thiruvellarai temple and the Omandur temple.
Addressing Congestion and Safety Concerns
At present, the road is a constricted single-lane passage with a carriageway width of just 3.7 metres. This inadequate width leads to frequent traffic snarls, especially on auspicious days and festivals when thousands of devotees throng the route. A significant number of pilgrims traditionally walk between the two temples, sharing the narrow road with vehicles, which poses considerable safety risks.
With the recent approval from the state government, contractors have begun work to expand the road substantially. The plan is to widen the carriageway to 7 metres, effectively converting it into a proper two-lane road. A senior highways department official stated, "The road will be upgraded into a proper two-lane facility, improving safety and ease of movement for pedestrians and vehicles. The work is expected to be completed before March 2026."
Wider Benefits for Transport and Villages
The impact of this infrastructure upgrade will extend beyond the pilgrim traffic. The improved road is set to significantly benefit the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus services, ensuring smoother and more reliable connectivity. Furthermore, residents of nearby villages, including Omandur and Puthanampatti, will experience enhanced access. Students commuting from these villages to the Thiruvellarai junction and onward to Trichy city for education are poised to be major beneficiaries of the upgraded thoroughfare.
