Neeraj Chopra to Compete at 2026 Asian Games in Japan

Olympic and world champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is set to compete at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) confirmed on Friday. Chopra, who won gold at the last edition in Hangzhou, China, in 2023 with a throw of 88.88 metres, will look to defend his title on Japanese soil.

Chopra's Dominance in Asian Athletics

The 28-year-old Indian star has been a dominant force in Asian athletics, winning gold at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games and the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games. His 2023 winning throw of 88.88m was a Games record. Chopra also claimed silver at the 2024 Paris Olympics and gold at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

According to AFI president Adille Sumariwalla, "Neeraj is fully committed to representing India at the 2026 Asian Games. His training schedule is being planned to peak at the right time."

Preparation and Training Plans

Chopra is currently training in Europe under coach Klaus Bartonietz. He is expected to participate in the Diamond League circuit in 2026 as part of his buildup. The AFI has also scheduled national camps to ensure optimal preparation.

"We are working closely with Neeraj and his team to ensure he is in top form for the Asian Games," Sumariwalla added.

Impact on Indian Athletics

Chopra's participation is a major boost for India's medal hopes. The country is aiming for its best-ever haul at the Asian Games. In 2023, India won 107 medals, including 28 golds. Chopra's javelin gold was one of the highlights.

The 2026 Asian Games will be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. Chopra will face strong competition from Asian rivals such as Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem, who won silver in Hangzhou with 87.82m, and Japan's own Roderick Genki Dean.
