Vadodara Cricket Election Escalates with Defamation Notice Over Stadium Corruption Claims

The election for the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) has taken a dramatic legal turn as former secretary Ajit Lele, who supports the Revival Group, has served a defamation notice to Sanjay Patel. Patel is campaigning for the rival Royal Satyamev Jayate Group, led by Samarjitsinh Gaekwad and Dr Darshan Banker, in this highly contested election.

Corruption Allegations Spark Legal Battle

Sanjay Patel, who also previously served as BCA secretary, confirmed to TOI that he received the defamation notice from Lele regarding corruption allegations he made against the BCA management. "I received a defamation notice from Lele over the corruption allegations I made against the BCA management. I reiterate that corruption happened in the association," Patel stated emphatically.

He characterized the legal action as a "threatening tactic" and suggested that "the Revival Group is nervous" about the election outcome. During a Wednesday evening address to candidates and supporters of the Royal Satyamev Jayate Group, Patel announced he had engaged top legal counsel and would respond appropriately to Lele's notice soon.

Stadium Project at Center of Controversy

Ajit Lele confirmed that his defamation notice specifically addresses Patel's allegations of corruption in the Kotambi international stadium project. According to Lele's legal team, Patel made additional inflammatory comments, including calling the claims "bogus" and asserting that "fraud in the stadium is a bigger issue."

The legal team further alleged that Patel forwarded a social media post from his phone that accused the BCA of corruption and claimed the Revival Group was responsible for content posted by "Revival31" on Facebook. These allegations have created a tense atmosphere as both groups intensify their election campaigns.

Election Campaign Reaches Fever Pitch

Both the Revival Group and Royal Satyamev Jayate Group have significantly ramped up their election efforts in recent days. On Wednesday evening, each organized separate gatherings and dinners for their supporters in Vadodara, highlighting the divisive nature of this cricket association election.

Royal scion Samarjitsinh Gaekwad, leading the Royal Satyamev Jayate Group, launched a pointed attack against the Revival Group during his campaign. He criticized the quality of wickets at the Kotambi stadium and suggested the election date was strategically chosen for an auspicious day to potentially reduce voter turnout.

"It's a no-brainer that you have to vote out the Revival Group," Gaekwad declared to his supporters, framing the election as a clear choice between change and continuity.

Development Claims Versus Corruption Allegations

The Revival Group candidates have countered with their own campaign messaging, appealing to BCA members to support their ticket based on development achievements. They highlight their record of constructing the international stadium and organizing numerous international matches in Vadodara as evidence of their effective leadership.

This election has thus become a battle between competing narratives: one side emphasizing infrastructure development and match hosting capabilities, while the other raises serious questions about financial integrity and management transparency within the cricket association.

The defamation notice adds a legal dimension to what was already a contentious election, ensuring that the outcome will have significant implications for the future of cricket administration in Vadodara and the broader region.
