Spotify has announced another increase in prices for its Premium subscription plans in the United States. This marks the second price adjustment within two years, following a previous hike in July 2024. The music streaming giant confirmed the changes through an official update on its newsroom.
New Pricing Structure Takes Effect
The updated subscription rates apply immediately for new subscribers. Existing users will see the changes roll out over the coming weeks. Spotify detailed the specific price increases for each plan.
Individual Premium Plan
The Individual Premium plan now costs $12.99 per month. This represents an increase from the previous price of $11.99.
Duo Plan for Two Users
Subscribers to the Duo plan will now pay $17.99 monthly. The plan previously cost $16.99 per month.
Family Plan for Multiple Users
The Family plan sees its price rise to $20.99 per month. This is up from the earlier rate of $19.99.
Student Plan
The Student plan increases to $6.99 per month. This plan previously cost $5.99 monthly.
Company Explains Price Adjustment
Spotify stated that the price increases reflect its ongoing commitment to delivering enhanced value to subscribers. The company emphasized improvements in features, personalized experiences, and exclusive content as justification for the adjustment.
"We're updating the price of Spotify," the company announced. "Over the next month, Premium subscribers across the U.S., Estonia, and Latvia will receive an email explaining what this update means for their subscriptions."
The company directed new subscribers to visit spotify.com/premium for the latest pricing information. Existing users will receive direct communication about how the changes affect their current subscriptions.
Timing and Market Context
This price increase comes during a period of leadership transition at Spotify. Co-founder Daniel Ek announced in September that he would step down from the CEO position to serve as executive chair. Starting next year, Alex Norström and Gustav Söderström will assume roles as co-CEOs.
Norström recently addressed analysts about the company's pricing strategy. "We will act when the time is right for each specific market," he stated. "We'll do it at the appropriate price based on those market dynamics."
The current price adjustment follows reports from last year indicating Spotify planned to increase US subscription prices during the first quarter of the following year. The company has now implemented those planned increases, affecting millions of subscribers across the United States.
