Bengaluru to Implement AI-Enabled Paid Parking System in Major Areas
The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) is set to introduce a cutting-edge, AI-powered paid parking system across several key localities in the city. This initiative aims to tackle the persistent issues of unorganized roadside parking and severe traffic congestion that have long plagued Bengaluru's urban landscape.
Targeted Areas and Digital Framework
The new system will be rolled out in prominent areas including Jayanagar, HSR Layout, Cubbon Park, and Koramangala. According to a senior GBA official, the model is fully digital and app-based, designed to bring much-needed discipline to on-street parking. Motorists will be required to park exclusively in designated slots, which will be identified and managed through a dedicated mobile application.
Real-time monitoring enabled by artificial intelligence will automatically flag vehicles parked outside authorized zones. This technology-driven approach will trigger immediate alerts to towing personnel and result in penalties for violators, ensuring compliance without the need for manual intervention.
Operational Details and Pricing Structure
A Chennai-based private firm has been contracted to handle the operations, which encompass mapping parking spaces, integrating seamless payment systems, and managing enforcement mechanisms. The authority has outlined a clear pricing strategy: parking fees will be set at Rs 30 per hour for two-wheelers and Rs 50 per hour for cars.
Payments can be made conveniently through QR codes and the app, aligning with global best practices. "Cities across the world have adopted structured paid parking to manage limited road space efficiently. Bengaluru, as a leading IT city, must move in that direction," emphasized another GBA official, highlighting the necessity of this move for urban management.
Concerns and Challenges
Despite the potential benefits, the proposal has sparked concerns among traffic police and local stakeholders. Police officials have raised objections to the inclusion of residential streets in the paid parking scheme. They caution that imposing fees in these areas—many of which are already designated as parking zones—could lead to significant public resistance and unrest.
"A calibrated approach is needed, especially in residential neighbourhoods," advised a senior traffic official, underscoring the importance of careful implementation. These concerns come at a critical time, as the GBA is concurrently making preparations for upcoming civic elections, adding a layer of political sensitivity to the initiative.
