Jaishankar Discusses Indo-Pacific in Seoul Strategic Dialogue

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, on a two-day official visit to South Korea, met Wi Sung-lac, Director of the Office of National Security, for a high-level strategic dialogue in Seoul on June 24, 2026. The meeting focused on exchanging assessments of global developments and the evolving geopolitical landscape in the Indo-Pacific region.

In a post on X, Jaishankar described the discussion as a "useful exchange of strategic assessments on global developments and the Indo-Pacific," underscoring the shared interest of India and South Korea in upholding a stable, rules-based order in the region.

Bilateral Talks Advance Commitments from President Lee's State Visit

Earlier in the day, Jaishankar held extensive talks with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, lasting approximately three hours, including a working lunch. The discussions centered on operationalizing commitments made during President Lee Jae-myung's state visit to India in April 2026. That visit produced a Joint Strategic Vision for implementing and expanding the India-ROK Special Strategic Partnership over the next five years (2026-2030).

Foreign Minister Cho highlighted the "significant momentum" in bilateral relations, noting that the leaders assessed "swift progress on follow-up measures in areas such as trade, investment, and finance." Cho expressed appreciation for India's proactive hosting of "Korea Week" by the Prime Minister's Office, fulfilling PM Modi's promise to address challenges faced by Korean businesses in India. In a reciprocal move, Cho confirmed that South Korea would soon host a similar dialogue for Indian companies in Korea.

Geopolitical Concerns and Economic Ripple Effects

The ministers also addressed broader geopolitical and economic concerns amid tensions in West Asia. Cho wrote on X that he and Jaishankar engaged in an "in-depth discussion on the rapidly changing global situation" and agreed to maintain close communication in responding to economic ripple effects from developments in the Middle East.

Both sides underscored the importance of enhancing support for business interests in each other's countries. The dialogue reflects India's "Act East" policy, positioning the India-ROK partnership as a key pillar of regional stability and growth.

Upcoming Jeju Forum Appearance

Jaishankar is scheduled to continue diplomatic engagement at the Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity on June 25, where he will deliver the keynote address. Foreign Minister Cho expressed anticipation for Jaishankar's "sharp perspective and profound insights" on bilateral relations and the international landscape.

The visit, concluding on June 25, marks a significant step in deepening the special strategic partnership between India and South Korea, with both nations committed to close coordination on global and regional challenges.
