US Government Initiates Major AI Transition Away from Anthropic
The United States government has commenced a significant shift away from artificial intelligence tools developed by Anthropic, following a direct order from President Donald Trump. Federal agencies are now terminating their use of Anthropic's Claude platform and transitioning to rival OpenAI's technology, according to officials and internal documents reviewed by Reuters.
Multiple Agencies Confirm Transition Plans
Several key departments have already confirmed their departure from Anthropic's ecosystem. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced via social media platform X that his department is ending all use of Anthropic products, including the Claude AI assistant. William Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, revealed that his agency along with mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are similarly discontinuing their use of Anthropic tools.
The State Department is implementing substantial changes as well. An internal memo indicates the department will switch the AI model powering its internal chatbot, StateChat, from Anthropic to OpenAI technology. "For now, StateChat will use GPT4.1 from OpenAI," the memo stated, adding that additional implementation details would be shared with staff members in the coming weeks.
Presidential Directive Triggers Immediate Action
The mass transition follows President Trump's Friday order directing federal agencies to immediately cease all work with Anthropic. In his announcement, Trump emphasized national security concerns, stating: "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WILL NEVER ALLOW A RADICAL LEFT, WOKE COMPANY TO DICTATE HOW OUR GREAT MILITARY FIGHTS AND WINS WARS!"
The President's directive specifically criticized Anthropic's refusal to allow its AI models to be used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons systems, characterizing this position as putting American lives at risk and jeopardizing national security. Trump announced a six-month phase-out period for agencies currently using Anthropic products at various operational levels.
National Security Designation Looms
The Pentagon has taken an even more aggressive stance, announcing plans to declare Anthropic a supply-chain risk to national security. This designation would prevent US defense contractors from using Anthropic's tools altogether, effectively cutting the company off from the entire defense industrial base.
The dispute between Anthropic and the Trump administration centers on fundamental disagreements about AI ethics and military applications. According to sources familiar with the matter, the Department of War had been engaged in tense negotiations with Anthropic over AI guardrails before the presidential intervention.
Transition Timeline and Implementation
While some agencies have already confirmed their transition away from Anthropic technology, others are expected to phase out the tools over the coming months. The Treasury Department's announcement suggests an immediate termination, while other agencies may follow the six-month timeline outlined in the presidential order.
The shift represents a significant victory for OpenAI, which stands to gain substantial government contracts as federal agencies migrate to its technology stack. Industry analysts note that this transition could reshape the competitive landscape for government AI procurement for years to come.
Anthropic has not yet issued a public response to the presidential order or the subsequent agency transitions. The company's leadership faces difficult decisions about whether to modify their ethical guidelines regarding military applications or accept the loss of all US government business.
