Indore Advocate Targeted in WhatsApp Sextortion Scam Using Edited Obscene Clip

In a disturbing case of cybercrime, an advocate in Indore was targeted through a deceptive WhatsApp video call and subsequently blackmailed with an edited obscene clip to extort money. The complainant, after receiving threats demanding payment, approached the MIG police station, where authorities promptly registered a formal case.

Deceptive Video Call Leads to Blackmail

MIG police station in-charge CB Singh detailed the incident, explaining that the complainant received a video call on Friday from an unknown number. The caller, using a woman's voice, claimed to seek legal advice regarding a case and initiated a conversation. However, during the call, the screen remained completely blurred, and the person on the other end was not visible. The call disconnected abruptly within seconds.

Shortly after, the same number sent an obscene video clip to the advocate via WhatsApp. In this clip, a portion of his video was allegedly edited and merged with objectionable content. The accused also shared screenshots of his social media friend lists, threatening to circulate the morphed video among his contacts if money was not transferred immediately.

Police Investigation and Legal Action

MIG police registered a case under provisions of the IT Act and other relevant sections against two unidentified mobile number holders. Additional DCP Rajesh Dandotiya stated that a preliminary investigation revealed the SIM cards used in the offence were issued from West Bengal. Efforts are currently underway to trace the accused individuals involved in this sophisticated scam.

Dandotiya emphasized that sextortion is a form of cyber blackmail where criminals coerce or threaten a person by using intimate images, videos, or sexual content against them. Fraudsters often lure victims through social media platforms, dating apps, or fake profiles. They may video call victims randomly or encourage them to share private content, then threaten to make it public, share it with family, or post it online unless the victim pays money or complies with other demands.

This case highlights the growing threat of digital extortion schemes targeting professionals and individuals alike. Authorities urge the public to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited calls or messages, especially from unknown numbers, and to report such incidents immediately to cybercrime units. The investigation continues as police work to identify and apprehend the perpetrators behind this alarming incident in Indore.
