Kolkata Police Cyber Cell Launches Social Media Initiative Featuring Victim Testimonials
The Kolkata Police Cyber Cell has launched a fresh and impactful initiative on their official social media pages this Tuesday. This new program involves sharing detailed video testimonials from recent victims of various cybercrimes. The primary focus is on cases where fraudsters employed novel or sophisticated modus operandi to deceive individuals.
Victims Share Harrowing Experiences to Educate Public
In these videos, victims recount their personal experiences of being tricked by cyber criminals. A critical and repeated message from all victims is the urgent need for others to report such incidents to the police as early as possible, ideally within the "golden hour." Early reporting significantly increases the likelihood of recovering stolen funds by allowing law enforcement to act swiftly before money is moved or laundered through complex digital channels.
Case Study: Retired Banker Loses and Recovers Rs 24.4 Lakh
The first individual to share her story was a 65-year-old retired female banker who was duped of a staggering Rs 24.4 lakh. The fraud was perpetrated in the name of her own bank, adding a layer of deceptive credibility. The incident occurred on a Sunday, February 8, when she was resting after lunch and came across an online advertisement for a senior citizen card allegedly from her bank.
"I clicked on the advert, and within five minutes, I received a call. The person instructed me to pick up a video call," the victim recounted. "They took down my account number and then asked me to use my Facebook and WhatsApp accounts. I was told repeatedly not to disconnect the video call for a long period."
By the time she ended the call, multiple OTPs (One-Time Passwords) had been generated without her full understanding, leading to Rs 23.4 lakh being siphoned from six separate accounts. However, her immediate action proved crucial. "We went to the local Netaji Nagar Police Station and the SSD cyber cell immediately. We were at the police station until 3 am. But now I have received 95% of my lost amount," she stated, highlighting the recovery of Rs 21.4 lakh thanks to prompt reporting.
Second Incident: Civil Engineer Loses Rs 1.2 Lakh to Phishing Email
In another detailed testimonial, a 72-year-old civil engineer described how he fell victim to a phishing email scam. He received an email that appeared to be from his mobile service provider, demanding payment of an outstanding bill of Rs 3,000 via a provided link. Busy at work, he clicked without thorough verification and was redirected to a fraudulent payment gateway.
"I submitted my credit card details and the OTP. Almost immediately, Rs 1,20,000 was debited from my account," he explained. He promptly filed a complaint with the Shakespeare Sarani Police Station and the South Division Cyber Cell. The entire amount was successfully recovered within just four days by the cyber cell team, demonstrating the effectiveness of coordinated police action.
Police Advice and Statistical Context
The Kolkata Police accompanied these videos with clear safety advice for the public: "Do not click on unfamiliar links. Do not install unknown apps on your phone. Report immediately if you fall victim to fraud." For assistance, citizens are encouraged to contact the Kolkata Police's Digital Sentinel toll-free helpline at 1800-345-0066.
This initiative comes against a backdrop of rising cybercrime in the city. Kolkata Police registers an average of 1,000 cyber fraud cases every month. In recent periods, the city has witnessed fraud amounting to approximately Rs 208 crore, with police efforts leading to the recovery of about Rs 37 crore. To bolster support, the cyber cell at Lalbazar headquarters opened a new 24x7 helpline number last month, ensuring round-the-clock accessibility for citizens in distress.
Engagement and Future of the Program
While the police will not be taking direct questions during the initial broadcasts to manage expected high engagement—anticipating hundreds to join via the Kolkata Police Facebook page—they encourage viewers to submit their questions. These queries will be collected and answered by the cyber cell team in subsequent sessions, fostering an ongoing dialogue about cyber safety.
This proactive social media campaign represents a significant step in public awareness, leveraging real victim stories to combat the growing threat of cyber fraud in the digital age.
