Union Minister Meghwal Advocates for Public Awareness to Fight Cybercrime
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Sunday emphasized the critical need for extensive public awareness campaigns to address the escalating threat of cybercrime. Speaking at the conclusion of a three-day national workshop in Jaipur, Meghwal acknowledged that while digitalization has brought unprecedented convenience, it has also introduced new and complex challenges that require urgent attention.
National Workshop on Cyber Safety
The workshop, titled "Cyber Safety: Awareness, Protection and Inclusive Access to Justice", was organized by the Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority at the Rajasthan International Centre in Jaipur. It aimed to strengthen cyber awareness, enhance digital access to justice, and build institutional capacity to counter emerging online threats. Meghwal highlighted that the 21st century is poised to be dominated by Asia, with India taking a leadership role in curbing crimes, including cyber offenses.
Citizens as the First Line of Defense
Meghwal pointed out that informed and vigilant citizens form the first line of defense against cyber frauds, financial scams, and other online crimes. He stated, "The revolution in information and technology brought significant changes in our lives. From finding an address while travelling to making payments with a single click, life became easier. However, it also created new and complex challenges that can only be tackled through massive awareness, education, and strong legal frameworks."
He further stressed that as India advances in the era of digital transformation and Industry 4.0, awareness must keep pace with technological developments. This requires coordinated efforts involving the government, judiciary, law enforcement agencies, and civil society.
Need for Specialized Training
Acting Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, Sanjeev Prakash Sharma, also addressed the workshop, emphasizing that effective handling of cybercrime cases necessitates specialized and continuous training for police personnel at all levels. He noted, "Not only senior officers but also constables and lower-ranked staff must be equipped with a sound understanding of cyber laws."
The workshop concluded with a call to action for all stakeholders to collaborate in creating a safer digital environment, underscoring the importance of public education and robust legal measures in the fight against cybercrime.
