The Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Mumbai is closely monitoring the health of a 4.6-year-old Asiatic lion named Bharat (L5), who is in a serious condition. According to a press release from the national park, blood investigations have indicated the possibility of a serious systemic illness.
Health Deterioration and Diagnosis
Additional samples were collected and sent to multiple laboratories for confirmation and comparative evaluation. The findings suggested the possibility of a blood parasitic infection and/or complications associated with an old hind-quarter injury, including possible trauma during routine movement. This comes after a tiger cub died last month due to Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), a rare viral condition.
Arrival and Onset of Symptoms
Bharat arrived from Sakkarbaug in January 2025. In March 2026, he showed signs of illness, including loss of appetite and dullness. Faecal samples were collected for viral screening, and laboratory investigation confirmed positivity for Feline Panleukopenia Virus infection.
Current Condition and Care
At present, Bharat is showing signs of hind limb paresis, and swelling of the nictitating membrane persists. He is under continuous observation, supportive care, and treatment by veterinarians. The park authorities have assured that all necessary measures are being taken to provide the best possible medical attention to the lion.
Visitors and wildlife enthusiasts are urged to stay updated through official channels for any further developments regarding Bharat's health.
