Environmental NGO Exposes Illegal Construction in Mumbai's Protected Area

The environmental non-governmental organization Vanashakti has recently filed a formal complaint with multiple state authorities, including the forest department and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), regarding the alleged destruction of trees and other vegetation within the Royal Palms township located in Goregaon (East). The complaint centers on the construction of large sheds covering a two-acre area, which is reportedly intended for rental use in film shoots.

Violation of Eco-Sensitive Zone Regulations

According to D Stalin, the director of Vanashakti, the site near the Windsor Gate of the Royal Palms complex, which is adjacent to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), is designated as an eco-sensitive zone (ESZ). This classification strictly prohibits any major construction activities without explicit permission from the ESZ monitoring committee, as well as approval from forest and civic bodies. Stalin expressed deep concern over the clearing of several trees and vegetation to make way for these sheds, emphasizing that such actions are illegal and must be halted immediately to protect the fragile ecosystem.

Official Inspection Confirms Environmental Damage

In response to the complaint, a formal site inspection was conducted on February 17. The inspection team verified the destruction of trees and has since communicated with the BMC to take appropriate action, given the location's ESZ status. Stalin further highlighted that for many months, the biodiversity of the region, including wild animals and birds, has been adversely affected by these activities, underscoring the broader environmental impact beyond just tree loss.

The case raises significant questions about enforcement of environmental laws in urban areas, particularly in zones critical for conservation. Authorities are now under pressure to address the violation and ensure compliance with ESZ regulations to prevent further ecological harm.
