Nagpur: Mild rain and gusty winds brought temporary respite from the intense summer heat across Nagpur and other parts of Vidarbha on Saturday. Issuing a yellow alert for several districts of Vidarbha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rain and thunderstorm activity on Sunday.
Tree Uprooting Incidents Disrupt Traffic
The sudden change in weather and accompanying winds led to at least five incidents of tree uprooting across Nagpur, briefly disrupting vehicular movement in different areas. According to fire department officials, trees were uprooted near Bhavan's School in Civil Lines, Power Grid Chowk, Jadhav Chowk near Cotton Market Fire Station, Date Layout in Trimurti Nagar and behind Gajanan Temple in the same locality.
Rainfall Data Across Vidarbha
The gusty winds and scattered showers were reported in different parts of Vidarbha. According to IMD data, Yavatmal recorded the highest rainfall at 12.3mm, followed by Washim at 7.6mm and Buldana at 7mm. Gondia recorded 3.6mm while Akola received 2.3mm of rainfall. Chandrapur and Gadchiroli too witnessed light rain activity.
Temperatures Still High Despite Rain
Despite the rain, temperatures continued to hover around the 40 degrees Celsius mark in many districts. Akola was the hottest place in Vidarbha at 42.2 degrees Celsius, while Wardha recorded 41.5 degrees. Nagpur, Amravati, and Buldhana registered maximum temperatures of 40.4 degrees Celsius.
Forecast for Sunday: Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds
The IMD has predicted that moisture incursion and local weather systems are likely to trigger more thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over Vidarbha on Sunday. The yellow alert advises residents to remain cautious during sudden weather activity.
The sudden spell of rain, cloudy skies and strong winds, however, brought noticeable relief to residents after days of scorching heat conditions across the region.
