Prayagraj Shivers at 6°C: Coldest Day in Years, Schools Shut Till Jan 10
Prayagraj Cold Wave: Temp Plummets, Schools Closed

The holy city of Prayagraj, also known as Sangam City, is grappling with an intense cold wave, recording what is likely its coldest day in several years. On Thursday, the maximum temperature plunged to a chilling 11.4 degrees Celsius, a staggering 10.5 degrees below the seasonal average.

A Sharp and Biting Temperature Drop

The severity of the cold snap became clear within a 24-hour window. While Wednesday saw a maximum of 17.5°C, Thursday's high was a mere 11.4°C. The night was even harsher, with the mercury dipping to 6 degrees Celsius, marking the lowest minimum of this winter season so far. This reading is reminiscent of the chill experienced in January 2024, though the city's coldest day in the past decade remains January 8, 2023, when temperatures fell to 3.2°C.

Residents are facing a double whammy of low temperatures and high humidity, with levels oscillating between 80% and 100%. This combination has made the cold feel particularly penetrating and unbearable. Dense fog enveloped the city in the early morning, refusing to lift for most of the day and blocking sunshine that could have provided some relief.

Life and Travel Grind to a Halt

The extreme conditions have significantly disrupted daily life. Roads and public parks wore a deserted look as people chose to stay indoors. The rail network was also severely impacted, with several trains, including major long-distance services like the Prayagraj Express and Humsafar Express, arriving hours behind schedule, stranding and inconveniencing numerous passengers.

In response to the health risks posed by the cold, the district administration has ordered the closure of all schools in Prayagraj until January 10. This precautionary measure has been welcomed by parents and educators alike, who cited dangers from the low temperatures, dense fog, and poor visibility during morning commute hours.

Faith Endures Amidst the Freeze

Despite the harsh weather, the spirit of devotion remains unshaken at the ongoing Magh Mela. Lakhs of devotees and Kalpwasis, undeterred by the biting cold, continue to take holy dips at the Sangam confluence in the early hours. Those staying in temporary tents have arranged bonfires and makeshift heating to cope. Daily rituals, prayers, and spiritual discourses are proceeding uninterrupted, showcasing the deep faith and resilience of the pilgrims, for whom enduring hardship is part of the sacred observance.

Meteorologist SK Agnihotry explained the cause behind the sudden freeze. "The intense cold is primarily due to heavy snowfall in the Himalayan region," he said. "Cold and moisture-laden winds blowing from the western direction are causing a sharp fall in temperature across the plains, including Prayagraj. These conditions are likely to persist for the next few days."

Weather experts have advised residents, especially the elderly and children, to avoid early morning exposure, wear adequate warm clothing, and remain vigilant as the cold wave continues to grip the region.
