Vidarbha Swelters as Temperatures Soar Near 40°C, Marking Early Summer Onset

A sudden and sharp rise in temperatures across the Vidarbha region has signalled an early onset of summer-like conditions, leaving residents grappling with significant discomfort, particularly during the afternoons under clear skies. According to the latest data released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), several districts in the region recorded temperatures perilously close to the 40°C mark on March 5, indicating a dramatic increase in heat intensity that has caught many by surprise.

Amravati Emerges as Hottest Spot in Maharashtra

Amravati was the hottest location in the region, recording a maximum temperature of 39.8°C, which also stood as the highest temperature recorded in the entire state of Maharashtra for that day. Other districts in Vidarbha were not far behind, experiencing similarly intense heat. Akola registered 39.5°C, Wardha reached 39.1°C, and Bramhapuri touched 39°C, painting a picture of widespread thermal distress across the area.

Weather Officials Link Rise to Clear Skies and Dry Conditions

Weather officials have indicated that this abrupt temperature surge is directly linked to clear skies and dry atmospheric conditions that have prevailed following a brief spell of unseasonal rain in late February. With dry weather likely to persist in the coming days, temperatures are expected to rise even further. Some areas of Vidarbha could soon witness the mercury crossing the psychologically significant 40°C threshold, exacerbating the already challenging conditions for the local population.

Nagpur and Other Cities Report Significant Temperature Increases

In Nagpur, the maximum temperature climbed to 37.6°C, which was 3.2°C above the normal range for this time of year, while the minimum temperature settled at 14.6°C. The sharp rise in daytime temperatures has made conditions particularly uncomfortable for residents, especially during the afternoon hours when the sun is at its peak intensity.

Other cities across Vidarbha also reported alarmingly high temperatures:

  • Chandrapur recorded 38.5°C
  • Washim reached 38.4°C
  • Bhandara registered 37.4°C
  • Yavatmal hit 37.6°C
  • Buldana was at 36.8°C
  • Gadchiroli recorded 36.6°C
  • Gondia reported 36.5°C, the lowest in the region but still notably high

Low Humidity and No Rainfall Compound the Heat

Meteorological data further revealed relatively low humidity levels during the afternoons in several cities, which has contributed to the dry heat conditions that many find particularly oppressive. Adding to the concern, no rainfall was recorded across the entire Vidarbha region in the past 24 hours, underscoring the persistent dry spell that is fueling this early summer heat. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions as the region braces for potentially even hotter days ahead.
