Pump owners across various parts of the city reported that vehicle queues began forming on Sunday evening and persisted at many outlets through Monday. The surge followed growing public concern regarding the impact of the West Asia conflict on fuel supplies and prices.
Public Reaction to PM Modi's Appeal
A few motorists indicated that the rush intensified on Sunday after Prime Minister Modi appealed to citizens to reduce petrol consumption. A pump owner noted that many consumers appeared to interpret the appeal as a sign of imminent rationing or a steep increase in rates. This misinterpretation fueled panic buying among the public.
Government Assurance on Fuel Supplies
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued a statement on Monday, assuring citizens that crude oil inventories remain stable, refineries are operating at optimum levels, and there are no fuel shortages across the country. A senior official emphasized that the government has taken several effective measures to ensure uninterrupted fuel supplies for consumers. The official acknowledged disruptions in the global energy supply chain but stated that the government has strived to maintain fuel supplies for the common consumer with minimal inconvenience.
Increase in Sales at Fuel Stations
A petrol pump owner in Central Mumbai reported a sharp rise in sales on Sunday evening. He mentioned that the normal Sunday sale is around 8,000 litres, but on May 10, the outlet sold nearly 12,000 litres. Chetan Modi, president of the Petrol Dealers Association, also confirmed the rush at pumps on Sunday. At several fuel stations late Sunday evening, attendants reported longer waiting times and heavier-than-normal demand for both petrol and diesel.
Rush Continues on Monday
On Monday, the rush was witnessed at some pumps, while it had reduced at other places by afternoon, according to an association member. A source from an oil marketing company stated that there has been no official announcement regarding rationing or immediate price revision. The situation is expected to normalize as the government's assurances reach the public.
