Mangaluru: A programme on disability awareness and inclusive development, titled 'DNA Karavali Dhwani', is set to take place on June 23 at Ashoka Lions Seva Bhavan. The event is organized by Disability NGO Alliance (DNA), Maya Parents For Inclusive Development, Arivu Early Intervention Centre, in association with Lions Club Ashokanagar Charitable Trust and Lions Club Mangaluru Ashokanagar.
Objective and Vision
Poornima Bhat, founder director of Arivu Early Intervention Centre, stated on Friday that the primary aim of the event is to integrate specially challenged children into mainstream society. She highlighted that organizations, parents of special children, public representatives, and medical representatives will participate in the programme. During the event, concerns of parents will be recorded, and a report will be compiled and submitted to the government.
Demand for Parents Panel
Bhat demanded that the government establish a parents panel to facilitate decision-making regarding special children. She emphasized that this initiative is part of an effort to make Dakshina Kannada a model district for the development of special children.
Vocational Training for Older Children
Advisory board member Sheetal Ullal noted that children with disabilities receive all facilities until the age of 18. After that, they should be provided with vocational training, such as tailoring and gardening, through capacity identification to help them integrate into the mainstream.
Key Focus Areas
The programme aims to create awareness on several critical aspects, including disability rights, early identification and intervention, inclusive education, healthcare support, and community participation.
Dignitaries in Attendance
Health Minister UT Khader and Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath will be present at the event. The organizers encourage the community to stay updated with the latest Mangaluru news.
