With International Yoga Day celebrations already underway across the state, Kolkata is gearing up for a Sunday dedicated to wellness. And with the summer solstice on June 21 as well, the city has the longest day of the year to make the most of it.
Heritage Meets Wellness
On June 21, the Indian Museum turns its Central Courtyard into a mass yoga venue, with over 1,000 participants. The day also unveils two exhibits—a 19th-century chromolithograph of a yogi and a medieval miniature of Adi Yogi—while 'Music, Melody and Meditation' marks World Music Day. A day earlier, it partners with the Brahma Kumaris for 'I-Pause for Peace.' Dr Sayan Bhattacharya, director of Indian Museum and secretary and curator-in-charge Victoria Memorial, calls it a celebration of yoga's global legacy, aligned with Viksit Bharat 2047.
Hooghly Turns into a Wellness Hub
As dusk settles over the Hooghly this Sunday, the Bengal Paddle will carry a different cargo—mats, candlelight, and a barge of people trying to slow down. That's the idea behind 'Moonflow on the River', a dusk yoga session led by yogini Kriti, held entirely on the water, away from the city's chaos. 'We do this on the water for a reason… it's about reconnecting people with the Hooghly,' says Rishika Das Roy of The Barge Company. The evening continues beyond yoga, with a tea tasting by Sibarti, art therapy, athleisure offerings, a bath salts station, and financial wellness conversations with Anand Rathi.
Intimate Wellness Experiences and Yogathon
The Cove, Kolkata is also hosting an immersive yoga experience with Zin Ahana, featuring mindfulness and breathwork, with small-group sessions open to beginners and seasoned practitioners. At its core is celebrity coach Ahana Chakraborty, looking to move beyond the usual studio script. 'We're creating an environment where people can feel every movement,' she says. Co-designed with Sarvam Shah, the session leans into sound, visuals and collective energy.
Meanwhile, Yogathon 2026 shifts focus to endurance, as participants take on 50, 108 or 150 Surya Namaskars, online or offline. HYROX athlete Amorto Das highlights its balance of performance and recovery, with over 200 participants, live sound healing and a shared sense of community. 'It's not just a challenge,' he says, 'it's a reset.'
On the occasion of International Yoga Day 2026, Kolkata will witness its first-ever Immersive Yoga Experience. Moving beyond the traditional yoga class format, the session will combine yoga, meditation, breathwork and sound-based practices within a specially designed audiovisual environment featuring projections, ambient lighting and curated soundscapes to create a multisensory wellness experience.
