Indian Armed Forces Seek Land Near Vizhinjam Port for Strategic Defence Facilities
In a significant development highlighting the strategic importance of upcoming port infrastructure in Kerala's capital, all three wings of India's armed forces have formally requested land near the Vizhinjam International Seaport to establish defence-related facilities. The Indian Army, Indian Air Force (IAF), and Indian Navy have submitted separate proposals for land allocation near the developing port complex.
Officials have clarified that this request is not connected to the Centre's proposed theatre commands, including the maritime theatre command planned for Thiruvananthapuram. The proposals represent independent initiatives by the three services to strengthen their operational capabilities in the strategically vital southern region.
Government Review and Coordination Process
According to sources within the state administration, preliminary discussions have already taken place between senior defence officials and representatives of various state government departments. These discussions involved Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL), the special purpose vehicle responsible for the port's development and operations.
The comprehensive proposal is currently under active consideration at the chief secretary's office. A high-level meeting is expected to be convened next month to thoroughly examine the armed forces' request in detail. Officials from key departments including revenue are likely to participate in this crucial meeting to assess land availability and allocation possibilities.
Specific Requirements of Each Service
Each of the three armed services has requested different extents of land based on their specific operational requirements and strategic objectives:
- Indian Navy: Has requested approximately 25 acres of land along with access to a dedicated berth within the port complex. Naval officials are reportedly planning to establish residential quarters and operational infrastructure to significantly strengthen their presence along the southern coastline. Given Vizhinjam's proximity to major international shipping lanes in the Arabian Sea, naval authorities view the port as strategically significant for enhanced maritime security and surveillance operations.
- Indian Air Force: Has sought nearly 100 acres to establish a comprehensive logistics hub and specific defence units in the region. Sources indicate that Thiruvananthapuram's geographic location, almost perfectly aligned in latitude with Minicoy Island in Lakshadweep, represents a key factor behind this substantial request. The Air Force considers the southern tip of the Indian peninsula particularly advantageous for monitoring developments across the Indian Ocean Region and enabling rapid deployment capabilities during emergencies.
- Indian Army: Has requested about five acres to establish an amphibious training centre. Defence officials have noted that such a facility located near a deep-water port like Vizhinjam would substantially enhance coastal training capabilities and improve joint operational preparedness with both the Navy and Air Force through coordinated exercises.
Land Identification and Strategic Significance
State government sources have confirmed that VISL has already identified suitable land parcels near the port that could potentially be allocated for defence purposes once final approvals are secured. "Once the government takes a final decision on the proposals, these identified parcels may be formally handed over to the armed forces," revealed a knowledgeable source familiar with the discussions.
The coordinated interest shown by all three services simultaneously underscores Vizhinjam port's growing strategic relevance beyond its primary commercial shipping functions. This development positions the port as a potential dual-use facility that could serve both economic and national security objectives, reflecting its importance in India's broader maritime strategy.
The proposals come at a time when India is increasingly focusing on strengthening its coastal security infrastructure and enhancing surveillance capabilities along vital sea lanes. The Vizhinjam port's location offers unique advantages for monitoring maritime traffic and responding to security challenges in the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean regions.
