Assam Government Coordinates with MEA to Track Residents in West Asia Amid Conflict

A senior official from the Assam government revealed on Sunday that the state is actively coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to gather information on residents from Assam who are living or stranded in West Asia. This effort comes in response to the escalating conflict in the region, which has disrupted travel and raised safety concerns.

Efforts to Gather Data on Stranded Residents

The senior officer, who requested anonymity, stated, "We are constantly in contact with the MEA and are trying to gather information on people from Assam in West Asia." He added that the state currently lacks official data on the number of people from Assam residing in the conflict-hit area, emphasizing, "As of now, we are still in the process of gathering data. We will share more information as and when we have it."

Residents from Assam are known to work in various sectors across West Asia, including aviation and business establishments. However, no immediate official figures are available to quantify their presence in the region.

Background of the Conflict and Its Impact

The conflict stems from a major attack launched by the United States and Israel on Iran on Saturday, resulting in significant disruptions. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was reported killed early on Sunday, escalating tensions further. This has led to widespread flight cancellations and rerouting across West Asia and beyond, including in India, due to airspace restrictions and closures.

The Assam government's proactive measures aim to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad, highlighting the importance of international cooperation during crises.
