Union Cabinet Greenlights Major Expansion of Srinagar International Airport

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has granted approval for the development of a new civil enclave at Srinagar International Airport. This significant infrastructure project comes with an estimated investment of Rs 1,677 crore and is strategically designed to strengthen aviation connectivity and modernize facilities in the Jammu & Kashmir region.

Project Details and Infrastructure Specifications

The ambitious initiative involves constructing a contemporary passenger terminal and comprehensive supporting infrastructure at the airport, which currently operates within the Budgam Airbase of the Indian Air Force. Located approximately 12 kilometers from Srinagar city, the development will span across 73.18 acres of land.

The new terminal building will cover an impressive 71,500 square meters, incorporating 20,659 square meters of existing structure. This state-of-the-art facility is engineered to accommodate 2,900 passengers during peak hours and handle an annual capacity of 10 million passengers per annum (MPPA).

Enhanced Operational Capabilities

The expansion project includes several critical enhancements to airport operations:

  • An enlarged apron with capacity for 15 aircraft parking bays, including one widebody (Code E) aircraft
  • Composition of nine existing bays and six newly proposed bays
  • A multi-level car parking facility with space for 1,000 vehicles
  • The existing 3,658 meter-long runway will continue to be operated by the Indian Air Force

Architectural Design and Cultural Integration

The terminal's architectural vision masterfully blends modern infrastructure with Kashmir's rich cultural heritage. Design elements will incorporate traditional craftsmanship, including intricate woodwork and locally inspired artistic details. The facility will ensure efficient passenger processing through upgraded lounges, streamlined check-in zones, and advanced security systems.

Sustainability and Environmental Considerations

Sustainability forms a cornerstone of this development project, featuring several eco-friendly initiatives:

  1. Advanced water harvesting systems for efficient resource management
  2. Maximized natural lighting to significantly reduce energy consumption
  3. Utilization of locally sourced eco-friendly building materials
  4. Target achievement of a prestigious 5-star GRIHA rating for green building standards

Economic and Tourism Impact

The government anticipates that improved airport infrastructure will substantially enhance connectivity to major tourist destinations throughout the region, including Dal Lake, Shankaracharya Temple, and the Mughal Gardens. This development is expected to catalyze tourism growth, attract investment, and generate substantial employment opportunities in Jammu & Kashmir.

The cabinet statement emphasized that "the development of the Civil Enclave represents a transformative step toward delivering world-class infrastructure and enhanced connectivity while showcasing the cultural and natural splendour of Kashmir."

This strategic investment in aviation infrastructure aligns with broader national objectives to boost regional development and improve transportation networks across India's northern territories.
