China Reaffirms Strong Partnership with Bangladesh, Warns Against External Interference
In a significant diplomatic development, China has firmly reiterated its commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation with Bangladesh's newly formed government. The Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh, Yao Wen, delivered this message during separate meetings with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed in Dhaka on Sunday.
China's Unwavering Support for Bangladesh
Ambassador Yao Wen emphasized that China stands fully prepared to advance collaborative efforts across all sectors with Bangladesh's new administration. He stated that Beijing deeply appreciates Dhaka's adherence to its "Bangladesh First" policy, which prioritizes national interests in foreign relations. The ambassador expressed confidence that both nations would jointly write new chapters in their bilateral relationship, building upon their existing comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.
"As a friendly neighbour and a comprehensive strategic cooperative partner of Bangladesh, China attaches great importance to deepening relations with Bangladesh," Yao declared. He further affirmed China's support for the new government under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's leadership in exercising smooth and effective governance.
Warning Against External Interference
In a pointed statement, Ambassador Yao issued a strong warning against any external attempts to disrupt China's cooperation with Bangladesh or other South Asian nations. "Any attempts to undermine our cooperation with Bangladesh or any South Asian countries are doomed to failure," he asserted firmly. The ambassador clarified that Sino-Bangladesh collaboration does not target any third party and should remain unaffected by foreign influences or pressures.
This declaration comes shortly after U.S. envoy Brent Christensen expressed concerns about "broader Chinese influence in South Asia." Additionally, U.S. President Donald Trump, in a recent letter to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, highlighted that the U.S.-Bangladesh partnership is "based on mutual respect and a shared interest in fostering a free and open Indo-Pacific where strong, sovereign nations can prosper."
Key Areas of Ongoing Cooperation
The discussions between Chinese and Bangladeshi officials covered several critical areas of mutual interest:
- Teesta River Project: Ambassador Yao confirmed that Dhaka and Beijing have engaged in prolonged discussions regarding the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project. He expressed optimism that work on this long-awaited initiative would commence in the near future.
- High-Level Exchanges: The ambassador assured that high-level visits between the two countries would continue, reinforcing diplomatic ties and facilitating deeper engagement.
- Comprehensive Partnership: Both sides acknowledged their longstanding friendship and reliable partnership, with Foreign Minister Khalilur describing China as a "trust-worthy friend and reliable partner for Bangladesh."
Bangladesh's Commitment to China Relations
Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman reciprocated China's positive sentiments, affirming Bangladesh's dedication to maintaining and enhancing its friendly policy towards China. He stated that Dhaka looks forward to further deepening practical cooperation with Beijing, aiming to generate greater benefits for the peoples of both nations through sustained collaboration.
This diplomatic exchange underscores the strategic importance both countries place on their bilateral relationship, particularly in a region where geopolitical dynamics are increasingly complex. China's reaffirmation of support for Bangladesh's sovereignty and development goals, coupled with its clear stance against external interference, highlights the deepening ties between the two Asian nations.
