Indian Embassy in Tehran Relocates Students Amid Regional Security Concerns
The Indian embassy in Tehran has successfully relocated a majority of Indian students stranded in Iran to safer locations outside the city, as confirmed in an official statement released on Tuesday. This decisive action comes in response to heightened security concerns and escalating tensions in the region, which have raised significant risks for foreign nationals.
Precautionary Measures and Relocation Efforts
According to the embassy, due to the "heightened risk perception" in Tehran, most Indian students have been shifted to more secure areas as a precautionary measure. The mission took full responsibility for arranging transportation, food, and accommodation to ensure their safety and well-being during this critical period.
The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA), which has been actively coordinating with the students and their families, reported that those who agreed to move have been relocated to Qom. Nasir Khuehami, the national convenor of JKSA, emphasized that "all the students who have been relocated are safe and accounted for." He added that the association remains in constant contact with both the students and authorities, closely monitoring the evolving situation.
Students Who Declined Relocation and Ongoing Concerns
Despite the embassy's efforts, a small number of students declined the offer of relocation and continue to remain in Tehran. The embassy noted that there is no clarity on the reasons behind their decision, highlighting the complex personal circumstances that may influence such choices during crises.
In Urmia, another area of concern, Indian students have expressed fear over their safety after fresh airstrikes near the university's residential block triggered panic. Videos of shaken buildings and distressed students have surfaced on social media, underscoring the urgent need for protective measures. In response, JKSA has appealed to the government to relocate these students and facilitate transit to neighboring Armenia, given its proximity to Urmia, until evacuation becomes feasible once airspace conditions permit.
Embassy Advisory and Emergency Support
The embassy has reiterated its advisory for Indian nationals still in Iran, urging them to remain indoors as far as possible, stay away from windows, exercise due caution at all times, and avoid areas of protests or demonstrations. They have also emphasized the importance of maintaining regular contact with the mission for updates and assistance.
To ensure continuous support, the embassy has issued emergency helpline numbers and an official email address for those in need of help. This proactive approach aims to provide a reliable communication channel during this period of uncertainty and potential danger.
The relocation efforts reflect a coordinated response between Indian diplomatic missions and student associations to safeguard citizens abroad amid volatile geopolitical developments. As tensions persist, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and swift return of all affected individuals to their homes.
