Meerut Metro Set to Become India's Fastest Metro System from Sunday
In a significant development for urban transportation, Meerut Metro will officially become the fastest metro system in India starting this Sunday. The new metro line will operate at a maximum operational speed of 120 kilometers per hour, matching the speed of Delhi's Airport Express Line, which currently holds the title of the country's fastest metro corridor.
Shared Infrastructure with Namo Bharat Trains
The Meerut Metro services will utilize the same tracks and infrastructure as the semi-high-speed Namo Bharat trains. This integration creates a seamless transportation network that allows commuters to switch between different train services without any discomfort. An official explained that this shared infrastructure will provide passengers with swift transitions between trains, significantly enhancing the overall travel experience.
Speed Evolution of Metro Systems
Delhi's Airport Express Line became India's fastest metro system in September 2023. Initially operating at 90 kilometers per hour, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation gradually increased the speed in phases over six months to reach the current 120 kilometers per hour. In comparison, the average speed of regular Delhi Metro trains on conventional lines remains around 75 kilometers per hour.
Route Details and Travel Times
The 24.9-kilometer Airport Express Line in Delhi features seven stations and completes the journey from New Delhi to Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector 25 in just 21 minutes. The travel time from Shivaji Stadium to IGI Airport Terminal 3 is approximately 15 minutes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 21-kilometer Meerut Metro with its 12 stations on Sunday. Once operational, the Meerut Metro will cover the distance from Meerut South to Modipuram in just 30 minutes, dramatically reducing travel time for commuters in the region.
Advanced Train Features and Capacity
A special Meerut Metro train carrying journalists conducted a trial run from Begumpul to South Meerut on Friday. During this demonstration, both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro trains were parked adjacent to each other, showcasing the integrated transportation system.
The Meerut Metro consists of three-car train sets featuring ergonomically designed 2x2 transverse and longitudinal seating arrangements with comfortable cushioned seats. Each train can accommodate more than 700 passengers, with a dedicated seating capacity of 173. The coaches are fully air-conditioned and equipped with numerous passenger amenities including luggage racks, grab handles, CCTV cameras for security, USB mobile charging facilities, and dynamic route maps for real-time journey information.
Each coach will include reserved seating arrangements specifically designated for women and senior citizens, ensuring comfortable travel for all passenger demographics. This comprehensive approach to passenger comfort and convenience represents a significant advancement in India's urban transportation infrastructure.
