First Namo Bharat Train Completes Full 82km Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor Journey
On Sunday, the platform at Sarai Kale Khan station in New Delhi was transformed into a celebratory scene, adorned with marigold garlands, fresh paint, and staff offering roses to passengers. This festive atmosphere marked the departure of the first Namo Bharat train to traverse the entire 82-kilometer Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor, hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the complete stretch.
A Milestone in India's Urban Travel Evolution
For riders, this journey represented more than just a new service; it symbolized a significant shift in India's urban transportation landscape. As cities expand outward and daily life increasingly spans multiple districts, Delhi is demonstrating the potential of fast, frequent regional rail systems to enhance connectivity and efficiency.
Inside the coach, the mood was buoyant and celebratory. Families posed for photographs, strangers exchanged route information, and nearly every row had someone capturing the historic moment on camera. The sense of excitement was palpable, reflecting a broader sentiment of progress and innovation in public transit.
Personal Stories of Transformation
Arvind Singh, a staffer associated with Deutsche Bahn, moved through the coach with folded hands and a rose for each passenger, a small gesture that mirrored the larger feelings of relief and pride among those on board. Many passengers shared how this new corridor would revolutionize their daily routines.
Sonal Vihaan, a government school teacher from A to Z Colony in Modipuram, boarded at Sarai Kale Khan with her son Abhiraj. She has long commuted from Meerut to Delhi, relying on carpooling with four other teachers. "We used to leave before 6am, and it still took over two hours. I had to wake up at 5am to reach school by 8," she explained. For her, the full corridor means a more manageable and less stressful routine. "Now, I can take the 7am train and reach school by 8 comfortably. I was so eager for this stretch to open," she told reporters.
Eighty-five-year-old Jagdish Jain from Jain Nagar in Meerut traveled to Delhi earlier in the day to visit his daughter in Jahangirpuri. He expressed his delight at the reduced travel time. "Earlier, it would take three to four hours by car between Meerut and Delhi. Now, it's just about an hour, 50 minutes to be precise. I can meet my daughter more often," he smiled.
For Himanshi, a recently married woman, the extension bridges a daily gap between her parents' house in Mohan Nagar and her in-laws' place in Begampul. After visiting her parents, she boarded the train at Sahibabad towards Begampul. "I have been waiting for this for a year. Earlier, I would get off at Meerut South and then either call my husband to pick me up or take public transport if it got late. Now, I can reach Begampul directly and just take a rickshaw home," she said.
Surprise Discoveries and Enhanced Connectivity
Some passengers discovered the route upgrade mid-journey, adding to the day's excitement. Vishal and Nirmala boarded at Ghaziabad with their toddler sons, Hardik and Vedansh, planning to disembark at Meerut South. However, they learned from fellow passengers that trains were now running further. "We didn't even know it started today. Now, visiting my sister will be much easier. From Shatabdi Nagar station, my home is close," Vishal laughed.
Phased Development of the RRTS Corridor
This inauguration marks the fifth phase of the RRTS corridor's opening. The journey began in October 2023 with the first section between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot, followed by a 17-kilometer extension up to Modinagar North. In August 2024, the corridor was further extended to Meerut South. An additional 13-kilometer section between Sahibabad and New Ashok Nagar in Delhi opened in January of last year. On Sunday, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the final section between New Ashok Nagar and Sarai Kale Khan, completing the entire 82-kilometer network.
Regular riders also came to witness the corridor's completion. Tarun and Alok from Modinagar, who have been traveling between Modinagar and Anand Vihar since operations began in October 2023, rode all the way into Meerut city on Sunday, experiencing the full extent of the new service.
The Namo Bharat train's inaugural run on the complete Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor represents a pivotal moment in India's urban infrastructure development, promising faster, more reliable commutes and fostering greater regional integration.
