Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a three-day state visit to Seychelles, declared that India envisions the Indian Ocean as an 'ocean of opportunity', where maritime security and economic prosperity go hand in hand, and partnerships are built on mutual respect and trust rather than size.
Modi's vision for the Indian Ocean
Speaking after delegation-level talks with Seychelles President Patrick Herminie, Modi said, 'Our vision is to make the Indian Ocean an ocean of opportunity.' He described the Indian Ocean as 'our shared home' and stressed that 'its security, sustainability and prosperity are our shared responsibility.' This vision forms the core of India's MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) initiative.
Defence and security integral to bilateral ties
Modi emphasized the strategic nature of bilateral relations, stating, 'We believe the defence and security of India and Seychelles are integral to each other.' The two leaders reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on regional and international issues. President Herminie highlighted that maritime security in the Indian Ocean region remains central to ties, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to counter piracy, drug trafficking, illegal fishing, and cross-border crime.
Economic cooperation and digital public infrastructure
Modi noted that discussions focused on making bilateral economic cooperation more resilient and future-ready. 'We will continue to explore new opportunities for the industries of both our countries. Work will also be done to enhance connectivity between India and Seychelles,' he said. Additionally, Modi announced that India would share its successful experience in digital public infrastructure with Seychelles. The two sides also discussed a special economic package of USD 175 million, as confirmed by President Herminie.
Historic visit and celebrations
Modi's visit coincides with Seychelles' 50th anniversary of independence and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles. He was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the State House by President Herminie. Modi will participate in the National Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour. The prime minister last visited Seychelles in 2015, while President Herminie visited India earlier this year.
Strategic partnership and Global South commitment
India and Seychelles share a longstanding partnership rooted in shared historical, cultural, and people-to-people ties. As a key maritime neighbour in the Indian Ocean region, Seychelles holds a special place in India's Vision MAHASAGAR and its commitment to the Global South. Modi's visit underscores the deepening strategic cooperation between the two nations.
