PM Modi welcomed the understanding reached in negotiations and reiterated India's consistent stance that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. He stressed the need for continued efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region, as well as safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce.
PM Modi's Social Media Post
In a post on X, PM Modi stated, "Spoke with the President of Iran, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, on the recent developments in West Asia. Welcomed the progress made in the negotiations and expressed hope that continued efforts will lead to lasting peace in the region. Reiterated the importance of freedom of navigation in the Hormuz Strait for India and the World."
Third Conversation Since Conflict Erupted
This marks the third conversation between the two leaders since the conflict in West Asia began on February 28, involving Israel and the US on one side and Iran on the other. Previous calls took place on March 12 and March 21. During those conversations, PM Modi highlighted India's priority regarding the safety of Indian nationals in the region, including those in Iran, and the importance of unhindered transit of energy and goods. He also extended greetings on Navroz and Eid.
Context of US-Iran MoU
The talks followed the virtual signing of a 14-point memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran, which outlines provisions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and easing financial restrictions on Iran. However, Iran clarified on Tuesday that it has no plans for any meetings with the United States in the coming days at any level. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated, "Basically, we have no plans to meet with the American side at any level in the next few days." He clarified that technical-level discussions in Doha are related to implementing the MoU, including the release of Iran's frozen assets, and are not political negotiations with Washington.
