Russia Extends Energy Support to India as Gulf Tensions Intensify
In a significant development amid escalating global concerns, Russia has formally indicated its readiness to support India with energy supplies in the event of any disruptions arising from the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. This statement comes as hostilities between the United States and Iran have intensified, impacting trade routes, shipping lanes, and energy markets worldwide.
India's Preparedness and Strategic Reserves
Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri addressed the media on Tuesday, assuring that India maintains sufficient reserves of crude oil and petroleum products to manage short-term disruptions. He emphasized that the country's energy strategy is guided by a trilemma of availability, affordability, and sustainability, focused on meeting the needs of its citizens.
According to sources cited by ANI, India currently holds approximately 25 days' worth of crude oil and an equivalent amount of petrol and diesel stocks, totaling roughly eight weeks of inventory. Notably, only 40% of India's crude imports transit through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has closed for all commercial activities, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warning that any ship passing through will be set on fire. The remaining 60% of imports are sourced from other regions, providing a crucial buffer.
Diversification and Additional Safeguards
Minister Puri highlighted that India has actively diversified its crude sourcing over recent years to reduce vulnerability to regional disruptions. Indian energy firms continue to import Russian crude under existing contracts, further enhancing the nation's energy security. Public sector oil marketing companies maintain adequate fuel inventories, and strategic petroleum reserves serve as an extra cushion against potential supply shocks.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has established a 24x7 control room to monitor fuel stocks and supply positions across the country. Senior officials and heads of public sector energy companies recently attended a briefing focused on India's preparedness strategy in light of the Gulf crisis, as reported by ET.

Government sources have underscored that India's top priorities include ensuring uninterrupted fuel availability, protecting consumer interests, and safeguarding the well-being of nearly one crore Indian nationals residing and working in the Gulf region. The ministry stated, "The government remains vigilant and prepared to respond to any potential disruption," highlighting ongoing coordination with both domestic and international partners to bolster energy security.
This development occurs against a backdrop of retaliatory strikes by Iran, which have targeted oil refineries and production sites across regions, exacerbating global energy supply concerns.
