Ahmedabad Unveils Ambitious Mobility Plan to Transform City Transport
The Gujarat state urban development department is spearheading a comprehensive initiative to redraw Ahmedabad's mobility blueprint, with a bold proposal to ban the entry of heavy vehicles into the city. This strategic move targets GSRTC buses, luxury coaches, and other large transport vehicles, aiming to alleviate chronic traffic congestion and enhance urban livability.
Key Details of the Proposed Traffic Ban
Officials have disclosed that Ahmedabad currently experiences approximately 7,000 bus movements daily, contributing significantly to gridlock. Minister of State for Urban Development and Urban Housing, Darshna Vaghela, announced the plan during the inauguration of AmdavadNxt, a public exhibition focused on city mobility. She emphasized that the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is collaborating closely on this project, with the 2030 Commonwealth Games serving as a pivotal deadline for implementation.
"The ring road is proposed as the final entry point, where heavy vehicles would terminate, and their movement inside the city would be completely prohibited," Vaghela stated. This measure is designed to streamline traffic flow and reduce pollution levels in densely populated areas.
Integration with Public Transport Systems
The termination points for heavy vehicles will be strategically linked to existing and future public transport networks, including the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS), Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), and Metro services. Passengers arriving via long-distance buses will be required to switch to these city transport options for onward travel, promoting a seamless multimodal transit experience.
Vaghela urged residents to embrace this shift by moving away from private vehicles and adopting public transport. "This transition is crucial for reducing congestion and building a sustainable urban environment," she remarked, highlighting the long-term benefits for commuters and the city's infrastructure.
Supporting Infrastructure and Future Projects
The mobility plan is part of a broader vision that includes several long-term projects to bolster Ahmedabad's transport ecosystem:
- Development of a second ring road to enhance peripheral connectivity.
- Establishment of logistics parks to manage freight movement efficiently.
- Expansion of the Sabarmati riverfront to integrate recreational and transit spaces.
- Introduction of connector vehicles and improved parking facilities at metro stations to address last-mile connectivity challenges.
Additional Chief Secretary M Thennarasan provided updates on the 2030 Commonwealth Games preparations, noting that bidding processes have commenced. Proposals under consideration feature four new metro lines connecting key hubs such as the airport and GIFT City, which are expected to significantly boost intra-city mobility.
Focus on Smart Traffic Management and Regional Connectivity
Municipal Commissioner Banchha Nidhi Pani underscored the importance of innovative solutions in the plan. He highlighted initiatives like smart traffic management systems to optimize signal timing and reduce bottlenecks. Additionally, connectivity to satellite towns such as Kalol and Sanand will be enhanced through the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), facilitating faster and more reliable regional travel.
This holistic approach aims to position Ahmedabad as a model for urban transport reform, balancing immediate traffic relief with sustainable growth ahead of major international events like the 2030 Games.
