AI-Powered Surveillance Deployed on Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway for Enhanced Safety
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has implemented a state-of-the-art surveillance system on the upcoming Lucknow-Kanpur expressway, specifically designed to deter dangerous behaviors like making reels, performing stunts, and over-speeding. Motorists planning to use this high-speed corridor must exercise extreme caution, as advanced technology will monitor every movement.
Rs 9 Crore Control Room to Monitor 63-Kilometer Stretch
NHAI officials announced on Friday that a sophisticated control room, valued at Rs 9 crore, has been established in Unnao to oversee the entire 63-kilometer expressway. This six-lane carriageway is engineered to safely accommodate speeds up to 120 kilometers per hour, and all activities will be under constant surveillance. The control room will also feature on-duty doctors and paramedics to manage emergency situations promptly.
The expressway is scheduled to become operational for vehicular traffic in April, marking a significant upgrade in regional connectivity. Gautam Vishal, Chief General Manager of NHAI UP West, emphasized the commitment to safety, stating, "We have incorporated all necessary precautions to ensure secure commuting for vehicle owners. Cutting-edge technology tools, software, and artificial intelligence will be extensively utilized to uphold the highest global safety standards."
Advanced Camera Network with AI Capabilities
To enforce traffic regulations and enhance security, NHAI is installing 63 long-range vision cameras capable of reading vehicle registration plates from a distance of 500 meters. These cameras aim to curb instances of over-speeding effectively. Additionally, 16 VIDES (Video Incident Detection and Enforcement System) cameras, powered by artificial intelligence, will generate immediate alerts for patrolling staff and paramedics in the event of a car crash.
Nakul Prakash Verma, Deputy General Manager at NHAI's Lucknow project implementation unit, explained the system's capabilities: "The algorithm can detect sudden vehicle behavior on the stretch. It also distinguishes hazards associated with accidents, such as smoke, fire, sudden braking, and tyre bursts. Geotagged alerts with time-stamping and the vehicle's registration number will be flashed directly to the control room."
Emergency Response and Communication Systems
In addition to the high-tech surveillance, emergency call boxes have been strategically placed at intervals of 2 kilometers on both sides of the expressway. These boxes are designed to assist stranded individuals who may lack access to a phone or other communication devices. Through a two-way voice communication system, users can manually report emergencies, ensuring that help is always within reach.
This comprehensive safety protocol underscores NHAI's proactive approach to minimizing risks on one of Uttar Pradesh's most anticipated infrastructure projects. The integration of artificial intelligence and real-time monitoring sets a new benchmark for highway safety in India, aiming to protect motorists from preventable accidents and reckless behaviors.
