GMDA completes flood mitigation works at AIT Chowk
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has completed a series of flood mitigation measures at AIT Chowk to address chronic waterlogging and improve traffic flow during the monsoon season. A 300-metre-long stormwater drain has been laid near the police post along the Sector 54/55 Master Road, featuring double rows of 600 mm RCC pipes. This new drain connects AIT Chowk to Creek No. 4 via Smriti Vatika Park, channeling stormwater from the Aravalli Hills and Suncity area into the creek for faster evacuation.
Additional infrastructure to enhance drainage capacity
According to GMDA CEO P. C. Meena, six new surface water channels have been constructed—three around the AIT Chowk rotary and three near the police post—to divert stormwater into Creek No. 4. New road gullies are also being added at strategic points to accelerate rainwater collection and discharge, reducing road flooding and easing traffic congestion during heavy showers.
Existing drainage network expanded
These latest works supplement earlier infrastructure, including a 1,100-metre surface drain on both carriageways and a 1,900-metre master stormwater drain from AIT Chowk to Ghata. The integrated network ultimately outlets into Leg-3 (Badshahpur Drain) along the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), ensuring uninterrupted stormwater flow and minimizing prolonged waterlogging risks.
City-wide monsoon preparedness programme
Meena stated that the AIT Chowk measures are part of GMDA's broader monsoon preparedness initiative, which includes desilting drains, strengthening drainage connectivity, constructing additional road gullies, and developing new stormwater infrastructure across key waterlogging-prone locations in Gurugram.
