Hisar: Tensions escalated in Hansi on Thursday as villagers demanding a connection from the Bhakra drinking water pipeline took out a massive tractor march, with more than 250 tractors reaching the Mini Secretariat amid heavy security arrangements. The protest comes against the backdrop of a 33-day-long agitation in Channot village, where residents have been pressing for drinking water access through a pipeline currently being laid for Hansi city.
Night-time Confrontation
The situation turned tense late Wednesday night when police and civil administration teams, accompanied by doctors and ambulances, reached the protest site around 2 am. Officials said the visit was aimed at conducting routine medical examinations of villagers sitting on an indefinite hunger strike. However, protesters alleged that police attempted to forcibly remove agitators, triggering heated arguments at the site.
Tractor Convoy and Security Measures
Villagers later mobilised a convoy of more than 250 tractors, which proceeded towards Hansi's Mini Secretariat via Jind Road. Anticipating unrest, the administration reportedly sealed several entry points into the city and allowed movement only through a designated route.
Project Details and Dispute
The Rs 80-crore Bhakra drinking water pipeline project, being executed under the AMRUT scheme, aims to supply drinking water to Hansi city. The nearly 30-km pipeline runs from Rajli Bhakra Head and passes through Channot village. Residents argue that since the pipeline passes through their village, they too should receive a connection, while the administration maintains that the project is specifically designed to meet Hansi city's drinking water needs.
