Mangaluru Launches Rs 165 Crore MGNVY 2.0 with Local Vigilance Squads

As preparations commence for the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the second phase of the Mahatma Gandhi Nagar Vikas Yojana (MGNVY 2.0), valued at Rs 165 crore, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is establishing local vigilance squads across all its wards. These squads will oversee the various development works planned under this significant urban renewal initiative.

Local Oversight and Development Focus

MLC Ivan D'Souza emphasized that the development projects will be tailored to meet local requirements. "During the concrete roadworks, construction of utility ducts, box drains, and covering slabs is being strictly regulated to prevent further road digging and cutting," D'Souza stated. He further announced the formation of a local awareness committee to provide essential guidance to contractors throughout the project's duration.

Foundation Stone Ceremony Details

D'Souza informed reporters on Thursday that Urban Development Minister Byrathi Suresh will lay the foundation stone for key projects at multiple locations within the city this Saturday. The event will be attended by District Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, marking a pivotal moment in Mangaluru's infrastructure advancement.

State-Wide MGNVY Phase 2 Implementation

The Karnataka state government has sanctioned the implementation of MGNVY phase 2, with an estimated budget of Rs 2,000 crore. This extensive program will span from the fiscal year 2024-25 to 2026-27 and includes major cities such as Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Ballari, Davanagere, Shivamogga, Vijayapura, and Tumakuru. Some projects have already commenced within the MCC limits, signaling an early start to this ambitious plan.

Financial Allocation for Mangaluru Projects

In Mangaluru, the financial breakdown for MGNVY 2.0 is as follows:

  • Rs 124.5 crore under the general unit grant
  • Rs 28.5 crore under the Scheduled Caste grant
  • Rs 12 crore under the Scheduled Tribe grant

This targeted funding aims to address specific community needs and ensure inclusive development across the city.

Addressing Sewerage and Pollution Concerns

D'Souza highlighted the severe sewerage issues plaguing Mangaluru, noting that water sources like rivers and wells are increasingly polluted due to sewage contamination. "A comprehensive sewerage plan costing Rs 1,250 crore has been submitted to the government," he explained. He urged local representatives to collectively advocate for the state government's approval and implementation of this critical plan. "Local legislators should work beyond politics for development," D'Souza added, emphasizing the need for bipartisan cooperation to tackle environmental and infrastructural challenges.

The establishment of local vigilance squads is expected to enhance transparency and efficiency in project execution, ensuring that the Rs 165 crore investment yields tangible benefits for Mangaluru's residents. As the city gears up for Saturday's ceremony, stakeholders remain hopeful that MGNVY 2.0 will pave the way for sustainable urban growth and improved quality of life.
