Mohali Municipal Corporation Implements Major Civic Reforms for Enhanced Sanitation and Transparency
In a significant move aimed at bolstering civic services and improving urban infrastructure, the Mohali Municipal Corporation has launched comprehensive reforms focused on enhancing cleanliness, operational transparency, and administrative efficiency across the city.
New Door-to-Door Waste Collection System
Municipal Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh Sandhu revealed to The Indian Express that the corporation has awarded a fresh tender for door-to-door waste collection, following directives from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB). This initiative is designed to ensure proper waste segregation and scientific disposal methods, which are expected to lead to cleaner neighborhoods and stronger environmental protection throughout Mohali.
The new waste management system represents a critical step toward modernizing municipal sanitation practices, with the goal of transforming Mohali into a cleaner, more organized, and sustainable urban center.
Aadhaar-Based Online Attendance Implementation
To further enhance accountability and transparency, the corporation has introduced an Aadhaar-based online attendance system applicable to all employees, including those in sanitation and solid waste management departments. This innovative mechanism allows staff to mark attendance via mobile phones directly from their duty locations, enabling real-time monitoring of field personnel and improving the overall quality and efficiency of civic services.
Commissioner Sandhu emphasized that these initiatives reflect the corporation's commitment to adopting modern technology and fostering a culture of efficiency and transparency in municipal operations.
Worker Integration and Benefits
Earlier, the Municipal Corporation unanimously passed a resolution ensuring that sanitation workers currently engaged in door-to-door waste collection would be integrated into the new system managed by the tender-awarded company. According to the resolution, these workers will receive online salaries deposited directly into their bank accounts and will be provided with essential facilities, including safety gear.
Sandhu reassured residents that all reforms are being implemented with a focus on public convenience and strengthening the city's civic infrastructure, aiming to deliver municipal services more effectively and reliably.
Sanitation Workers' Strike Threat
Despite these advancements, the Punjab Safai Mazdoor Federation, represented by general secretary Pawan Goyal, has announced plans for sanitation workers to begin an indefinite strike starting January 26. The strike is in opposition to the new system and tender process, highlighting potential challenges in the implementation of these civic reforms.
This development underscores the complex dynamics between technological innovation in municipal governance and the concerns of frontline workers, setting the stage for ongoing discussions about labor rights and urban management in Mohali.
