The Special Protection Group (SPG), responsible for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's security, has rejected the initial design of the main dais being constructed on Red Road for the International Day of Yoga programme on Sunday. Following the security force's instructions, the dimensions of the stage are being altered. The height is being reduced, and a canopy is being added to provide overhead cover.
Security and Safety Concerns
According to sources, the SPG team found the original structure violated standard operating procedures (SOPs). They requested to contact the decorators. The old plan posed a security challenge and also left the stage vulnerable to weather elements, which was the reason the Brigade Parade Ground was cancelled as an alternative venue. Additionally, the structure appeared weak, raising fears of a possible stage collapse.
A source aware of the developments stated, "Decorators are working on the revised stage design on a war-footing. There were multiple meetings and inspections involving senior officers from the SPG, Kolkata Police, the Intelligence Bureau (IB), and the central Ayush department. A new design was proposed and approved by the SPG team."
Weather Forecast and Additional Measures
The meteorological department has forecast rain over the weekend. The SPG cited security concerns over the stage height and safety concerns due to the lack of cover from natural elements, which violated its SOP. Sources said the SPG also expressed concern about the stability of the tall backdrop, as it could crash.
On Thursday, during arguments about the road block on Red Road at the Calcutta High Court, the Advocate General mentioned the SPG order. Additional Advocate General Billwadal Bhattacharya submitted, "India will be basically leading the world from Kolkata. The PM will be gracing the occasion, the governor will be there. The stage had to be pulled down because of SPG protocol. There are security threats."
