Navi Mumbai's Turbhe Flyover Construction Resumes After Two-Year Stalemate

In a significant development for Navi Mumbai's infrastructure, work on the long-stalled Turbhe flyover near Turbhe Railway Station on the busy Thane-Belapur Road has finally resumed. Officials from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) have confirmed progress on key pending components, marking a crucial step forward for this vital project.

Technical Hurdles Overcome to Restart Construction

The NMMC has successfully restarted construction after resolving major technical obstacles that had plagued the project for nearly two years. Key challenges included the diversion of a wastewater pipeline linked to the MIDC's Common Effluent Treatment Plant, which was located beneath the road where central piers were planned. Additionally, the initiation of pier foundation work at the Thane end has now been accomplished, clearing the way for further construction activities.

Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde has emphasized that despite the significant delays, cost escalation will not be entertained for the Rs 32 crore project. Traffic permissions are being systematically extended to facilitate the ongoing construction work without causing further disruptions.

Revised Design and Extended Timeline

The project had remained stalled after preliminary work worth over Rs 4 crore was rendered ineffective due to a faulty design. The civic body later sought expert input, with IIT Bombay approving a revised plan that enabled construction to restart. Originally scheduled for completion by early 2025, the project deadline has now been pushed to March 2027.

Once completed, the 560-metre, four-lane flyover is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve safety near the Turbhe Store area. The structure is specifically designed to address bottlenecks and reduce accidents along this critical transportation corridor.

Commuters Voice Frustration Over Ongoing Delays

Despite the restart, the slow pace of work has raised concerns among daily commuters, who continue to face severe traffic congestion on the stretch. Santosh Sahu, a regular motorist, expressed frustration, stating, "One has to negotiate the 500-meter patch for 10-15 minutes at any given time of the day, thanks to the authority for testing the patience of motorists."

Kalwa resident Jaywant Jadhav echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the urgent need for the infrastructure improvement. "The flyover is the need of the hour as traffic bottleneck has become a nightmare for motorists. It is the only option to decongest Thane-Belapur road and avert road mishaps," Jadhav remarked.

The resumption of work represents a critical step toward alleviating the persistent traffic problems that have plagued this important transportation route. As construction progresses, officials remain focused on completing the project within the revised timeline while minimizing disruptions to daily commuter traffic.
