Jaipur: The University of Rajasthan has temporarily suspended admissions to its PhD programme until further notice, following representations from students questioning the transparency of the selection process.
Admission Process Halted
Convener of the Rajasthan University PhD Admission-2025, Prof S K Gupta, issued a letter to all department heads and directors of centres stating, “In view of the representations received from students, the university administration has decided to keep the PhD admission interview process under RUPA-2025 on hold until further notice.”
The letter further mentioned, “Accordingly, all scheduled interviews and related admission activities are hereby put on hold with immediate effect. You are requested not to conduct any interview or issue any further communication in this regard until revised instructions.” The university indicated that a revised schedule and further directions will be communicated separately.
Student Unions Raise Concerns
Student unions have argued that the interview list released by the university administration raises questions regarding adherence to reservation policies, the transparency of the selection process, and the potential for arbitrariness in final selections. They contend that without making the category-wise interview list public, it is impossible to verify whether reservation rules have been followed.
National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) national spokesperson Ramesh Bhati said, “As candidates were called for interviews from June 16, they alleged that bifurcation of reservation was not mentioned in the list. For different departments, candidates twice the number of seats available were called, but there was no way to understand if the reservation norms were being followed.” Bhati added, “Without making the category-wise list of interview candidates public, the possibility of favouring preferred candidates at a later stage cannot be ruled out.”
