Uttar Pradesh Government Initiates Dog Shelter Project in Major Urban Centers
In a significant move aligned with recent Supreme Court directives, the Uttar Pradesh state government has officially announced plans to establish dedicated dog shelters across key cities. This initiative comes with a substantial budgetary allocation ranging between Rs 4.70 crore and Rs 5.30 crore, reflecting a committed effort to address urban animal welfare concerns.
Addressing Human-Animal Conflict Through Structured Shelters
A senior government official emphasized that these new shelters are expected to significantly reduce incidents of human and animal conflict in urban areas. "The establishment of these shelters will bring down cases of human and animal conflict to a large extent," the official stated, highlighting the proactive approach being taken to manage stray dog populations more effectively.
Accelerating Animal Birth Control Programs Statewide
Concurrently, the state administration is expediting the development of animal birth control centers under the jurisdiction of the 17 municipal corporations across Uttar Pradesh. "We are also expediting the progress of animal birth control centres that are going to come up under the 17 municipal corporations across the state," added the official, indicating a comprehensive strategy to tackle the issue from multiple angles.
Progress in Key Municipal Corporations
Specific advancements have already been noted in several cities:
- Prayagraj: The local civic body has successfully identified suitable land for establishing one of these centers.
- Lucknow: Expansion of existing animal welfare facilities is currently underway, pending formal approval from the executive board of the Lucknow Municipal Corporation.
This coordinated effort between state authorities and municipal corporations underscores a growing recognition of the need for systematic animal management solutions in rapidly urbanizing environments.
