Defence Ministry Implements 100% Hike in Financial Aid for Ex-Servicemen
100% Hike in Financial Aid for Ex-Servicemen Implemented

The Ministry of Defence has officially put into effect a major enhancement in financial support for India's veteran community. Announced on Saturday, 10 January, the move sees a 100% increase in assistance for ex-servicemen (ESM) and their dependents, fulfilling an earlier commitment made by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Key Grants Doubled Under Revised Schemes

The increased aid is being administered through schemes run by the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare via the Kendriya Sainik Board. This significant boost targets several critical areas of support for veterans and their families who are in need.

The Penury Grant has been raised from ₹4,000 to ₹8,000 per month for each beneficiary. This grant provides sustained lifetime support to elderly, non-pensioner ex-servicemen and their widows who are above 65 years of age and have no regular source of income.

The Education Grant has been doubled from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 per month per head. This support is available for up to two dependent children, from Class I through Graduation. It also applies to widows who are undertaking a two-year postgraduate course.

The Marriage Grant has seen a substantial jump from ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 per beneficiary. This grant is applicable for the marriage of up to two daughters of ex-servicemen and for widow remarriage, for ceremonies solemnised after the issuance of this new order.

Government Reaffirms Commitment to Veterans

In a post on the social media platform X, the Defence Ministry stated that this 100% increase reaffirms the government's dedication to honouring the service and sacrifice of veterans. The decision, initially approved by Rajnath Singh in October of the previous year, is now fully operational.

The schemes are financed through the Raksha Mantri Ex-Servicemen Welfare Fund, which is a component of the broader Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (AFFDF). According to the Ministry, this enhancement significantly strengthens the social security safety net for non-pensioner ex-servicemen, widows, and dependents from lower-income groups.

A Stronger Safety Net for Heroes

This implementation marks a concrete step in addressing the welfare needs of those who have served the nation. By doubling key financial grants, the government aims to provide more robust and dignified support to veterans and their families during challenging phases of life such as old age, education of children, and marriage.

The move is widely seen as a vital recognition of the contributions made by ex-servicemen, ensuring that the nation's gratitude is translated into tangible and meaningful assistance.
