Chandigarh Police Crack Down on 'Supernatural' Gold Robbery Gang

Chandigarh Police have made a significant breakthrough in a series of bizarre robberies. They arrested five members of a gang that used a fake supernatural fire trick to steal gold ornaments from unsuspecting women. The arrests occurred on Wednesday, and the accused appeared before a court on Thursday. The court granted police a two-day custody remand for further investigation.

Two Separate Cases Solved

The police action has led to the solving of two separate jewellery-snatching cases. These cases were registered at the Manimajra and Sector-34 police stations. Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwardeep Kaur provided details about the incidents.

In the first case, a woman named Om Kumari filed a complaint at the Sector-34 police station. She reported that three individuals stopped her on the road in May 2025. They engaged her in conversation and then performed a startling fire trick. Using this distraction, they snatched her mangalsutra, earrings, and ring before fleeing the scene.

The second case involved a complainant named Sunita. She told the Manimajra police station that two young men approached her while she was shopping on July 23, 2025. They walked alongside her and started talking. Suddenly, they used the same fire trick to create confusion. In the ensuing moment, they grabbed her gold earrings and escaped into the crowd.

Police Operation and Arrests

Police teams received a crucial tip-off recently. The information indicated that the accused were moving around Chandigarh. They were allegedly trying to sell the stolen jewellery and were scouting for new targets in Sector 45 and the Industrial Area.

Acting swiftly on this intelligence, the District Crime Cell formed two special teams. One team apprehended three suspects from Sector 45C. These arrests were linked directly to the Sector-34 case. The other team captured two more individuals near a cremation ground in the Industrial Area. These arrests connected to the Manimajra case.

Identities of the Accused

Inspector Jaspal Singh Bhullar of the District Crime Cell identified the five arrested men. The list includes Jilani, a 46-year-old resident of Shiv Colony in Ludhiana. Ramjaan, aged 36, hails from Anand Parvat in New Delhi. Hasmudin is 45 years old and lives in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Zahid, 24, is a resident of South Delhi. Alam, 33, comes from Hapur district in Uttar Pradesh.

Police have successfully recovered the stolen items. From the Sector-34 case, they retrieved a mangalsutra, a pair of earrings, and a ring. The Manimajra case yielded another pair of gold earrings.

Modus Operandi of the Gang

The Chandigarh Police revealed the gang's specific method of operation. They deliberately targeted women they perceived as uneducated or vulnerable. The accused would first initiate a friendly conversation. They often discussed family matters to build a false sense of trust and lower the victim's guard.

To execute the robbery, they employed a simple chemical trick. They spat sodium onto their palm. Sodium ignites upon contact with moisture, creating a sudden flash of fire. This dramatic display was designed to intimidate the women. It played on fears of supernatural powers or black magic.

Once the victim was frightened and distracted, the gang members issued instructions. They told the women to remove their jewellery and place it on the ground. The victims were then ordered to walk away without looking back. The robbers would quickly snatch the ornaments and disappear.

This case highlights a disturbing trend of criminals exploiting superstition and fear. The Chandigarh Police have urged the public, especially women, to remain vigilant. They advise people to be cautious of strangers using such tactics and to report any suspicious behavior immediately.
