Massive Drug Haul Incinerated in Andaman Islands in Phased Operation

In a landmark anti-narcotics achievement, the Andaman and Nicobar Police has successfully destroyed more than 6,000 kilograms of methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of approximately Rs 36,000 crore. This extensive disposal operation, conducted over a span of nine months, marks one of the largest drug destruction initiatives ever undertaken in India.

Seizure and Investigation Details

The contraband was originally seized by the Indian Coast Guard on November 23, 2024, during a critical interception of a vessel in Indian waters near the Andaman Islands. The vessel, manned by six Myanmarese crew members, was found to be carrying around 1,500 packets containing crystalline methamphetamine, commonly known as meth or the 'crazy drug'. This highly addictive substance is strictly prohibited under Indian law.

Following the seizure, the case was transferred to the Andaman and Nicobar Police for a thorough investigation. The probe was overseen by Director General of Police Hargobinder Singh Dhaliwal. An FIR was promptly registered on November 26, 2024, invoking key legal statutes including the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985, the Foreigners Act of 1946, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita of 2023.

Efficient Disposal Process

The destruction of the massive drug cache was executed in a meticulously planned phased operation, commencing on June 26, 2025, and concluding on March 12, 2026. A senior police official highlighted that despite the enormous quantity involved, the entire process was carried out efficiently through rigorous coordination and strict adherence to legal protocols.

The incineration took place at the facility of INHS Dhanvantri located in Minnie Bay, under the vigilant supervision of a high-level drug disposal committee. This committee was chaired by DIGP (PR) Dr A Koan and included distinguished members such as DIGP (CID) Jitendra Kumar Meena and SP (Commandant HG) Ravikant Kumar.

Significance and Impact

This operation underscores the relentless efforts of Indian authorities in combating international drug trafficking networks. The destruction of such a substantial quantity of methamphetamine not only disrupts the illicit drug supply chain but also sends a strong deterrent message to criminal organizations operating in the region.

The successful completion of this operation reflects the dedication and strategic planning of the Andaman and Nicobar Police, in collaboration with the Indian Coast Guard, ensuring that these dangerous substances are permanently removed from circulation, thereby safeguarding public health and security.
