The Amritsar police disposed of a massive cache of seized narcotics on Wednesday, destroying drugs worth crores of rupees. The operation, conducted at a designated incineration facility, aimed to eliminate evidence from concluded cases and send a strong message against drug trafficking.
Details of the Disposal
According to police officials, the disposed drugs included 150 kilograms of heroin, 200 kilograms of opium, and large quantities of hashish and pharmaceutical drugs. The total estimated street value of the contraband was over Rs 500 crore. The disposal was carried out in the presence of senior police officers and forensic experts to ensure complete destruction.
Legal and Environmental Compliance
The process followed strict guidelines under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The drugs were incinerated at high temperatures to prevent environmental pollution. Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar stated that the disposal was part of a regular procedure to clear seized drugs from police storerooms.
Ongoing Anti-Drug Efforts
This disposal is part of the Punjab Police's broader crackdown on drug trafficking. In the past year, the Amritsar police have registered over 500 cases under the NDPS Act and arrested more than 700 individuals. The force has also intensified awareness campaigns in schools and colleges to educate youth about the dangers of drug abuse.
Public Reaction
Local residents welcomed the move, expressing hope that such actions would deter drug peddlers. Social worker Harpreet Singh said, "This sends a clear message that the police are serious about eradicating drugs from our society." However, some activists called for more focus on rehabilitation of addicts.
The police have urged citizens to report any suspicious drug-related activities through the dedicated helpline. They assured that strict action would be taken against anyone involved in the illegal drug trade.
