In a significant crackdown on corruption, the Vigilance Investigation Bureau (VIB) of Bihar made two major moves on Wednesday, targeting a police officer and a government engineer in separate cases.
Police Officer Caught Red-Handed in Bribery Trap
The VIB officials arrested an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) from Arwal district for allegedly accepting a bribe. The accused, Mohammad Mujtwa Ali, was posted at the Wanshi police station. He was apprehended while he was supposedly taking a bribe of Rs 5,000.
The arrest followed a formal complaint by a man named Mukesh Kumar. Kumar alleged that the police officer had demanded the money in exchange for clearing his name and three others from a chargesheet. After his arrest and necessary interrogation, the ASI was scheduled to be presented before the Special Vigilance Court in Patna.
Engineer's Crore-Rupee Assets Under Vigilance Scanner
In a parallel and unrelated development, the VIB registered a First Information Report (FIR) against a junior engineer for amassing wealth far beyond his legitimate earnings. The accused, Mohammad Ansaurul Haque, serves in the planning and development department and is posted in Darbhanga.
The FIR, lodged under the stringent Prevention of Corruption Act, alleges that Haque accumulated assets worth over Rs 1 crore. Shockingly, this wealth is estimated to be a staggering 458.72% higher than his known sources of income.
Acting on a search warrant issued by the Special Vigilance Court in Muzaffarpur, the bureau launched a multi-location raid. Four separate VIB teams simultaneously searched three properties linked to the engineer. The raids targeted his two residences and his office in Darbhanga, as well as his permanent home in Harihaha, located in the Madhubani district. Search operations and a detailed investigation are currently in progress.
A Continued Fight Against Graft
These actions underscore the ongoing anti-corruption drive in the state. The case against the junior engineer marks the 108th FIR related to corruption registered by the VIB in the year 2025. Meanwhile, the bribery trap that led to the ASI's arrest is recorded as the 88th trap case of the year.
So far in 2025, these efforts have led to the arrest of 99 accused individuals. Furthermore, the bureau has successfully recovered bribe money totaling Rs 35,41,500 from such operations, highlighting the tangible results of its vigilance activities.
