A court in Bijnor has sentenced four brothers to life imprisonment for the murder of a 23-year-old man during a dispute linked to a marriage proposal in 2017. The convicts, all in their 30s, were out on bail during the trial.
Background of the case
According to the prosecution, Rizwan Ahmed alias Sonu of Bhanera village in Bijnor was set to marry a woman named Samreen. During a meeting between the two families, Samreen’s father, Zahoor Ahmed, and Rizwan’s father, Maqsood Ahmed, got involved in a heated argument over some issues.
The fatal incident
Seeing the matter escalating, Samreen’s cousin Naushad, 23, intervened to defuse the situation but was attacked with knives by Maqsood and his sons. Naushad was rushed to a health centre, where doctors declared him dead.
Legal proceedings
Police named six people in the case. During the trial, prime accused Maqsood died, while a minor accused was referred to the Juvenile Justice Board, leaving four brothers to face trial. Additional district government counsel Jitendra Pal Rajput said additional district judge Prashant Mittal convicted Rizwan, Imran, Hifzan and Irfan. The court sentenced all four to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 45,000 each on the convicts.
